Hick Might As Well Be Renovating the Winchester House

Hick has a lot of things on his plate. And not the tasty kind. He's got to finish work on Back-Creek Neighbor Bev's house, finish painting Pony House, wire his security system at his new SUS2 (Storage Unit Store 2), and start work on one of our two new acquisitions, the flip houses.

The thorn in his side is Bev. She's quite particular about her new old house. Hick follows her directions to a T, but then she finds something unsuitable about the project. Yesterday, Hick discovered that Bev had spent the night in her camper in the back yard.

"That light makes a buzzing noise. We can't sleep in the house."

"Yes. It's a fluorescent light. The kind you asked for. They make a noise."

"Well, we can't stand it. We've been turning off the breaker every night."

"Bev. The breaker is not meant to do that. You can't be flipping it off and on."

"Then you need to put in a breaker box that I CAN flip off and on."

Hick might as well be working on the Winchester House. The one owned by the heir to the Winchester rifle fortune, who thought the ghosts of all the people killed by Winchesters were coming for her. So the house was never finished. It was continually added onto, with doors and staircases to nowhere. That's how I remember reading about it, anyway. You can Google for yourself.

Anyhoo... Hick is going to need to set an end date to Bev's renovations. Otherwise, he might as well build himself a themed caretaker shed on the grounds, and save his gas money.

  1. I've had fluorescent lights in several houses and they don't buzz until they're about to burn out, so something is wrong there. Has Hick upgraded the fuses to cope with heavier loads? Is he using secondhand fluoro tubes?
Bev sounds like a royal PITA.
Now I have to google Winchester House.

    1. Hick made his living by all things mechanical, which included wiring buildings and installing lights. I'm sure he knows enough to use the correct fuses. I haven't paid attention to fluorescent lights that were in my classrooms and in my (lighted) basement lair, so I don't know how loud the buzzing might be. Probably not loud enough to hear over a classroom of 30 students, or an electric heater under my lair desk.

Let the record show that Bev also complains that electrical fields are torturing her, and has moved several times because of that. So her complaining about fluorescent lights is not a shock. Hick would not install secondhand lights in Bev's house, as she is paying him, and he either buys new, or Bev's husband buys equipment for Hick to install.

You will probably be entertained by the info on Winchester house.

  2. They won't make any noise until you flip them on, so is she getting up and turning them on? She might benefit from some mental health intervention!

    1. From your fingers to everyone else in The Universe's eyes! Hick says all the time that Bev needs help. I don't know if she leaves the lights on, or if she just FEELS the energy. She says that electric waves from the utility poles attack her. Swore that while she was gone, the electric company put something on the poles. Hick said it was some kind of transformer that had been there since before she bought the house.
