A Case of Mistaken COIN-Entity

Val got her nose out of joint this week when one of her rightful coins was bestowed upon someone else. We'll get to that a bit later. First we'll take a look a THE SINGLE SOLITARY PENNY that I found this week, quite far from home.

TUESDAY, August 31, we were in northeast Oklahoma for a MiniPalooza casino trip. We stay overnight, and visit 6-7 casinos while we're there. At our 3rd stop, High Winds Casino, I was hopping from slot to slot, seeking a winner. I told The Pony,

"I saw that one Cleopatra game up front. I thought about playing it, but went on by. I keep thinking about it. I guess I'll go back up there and give it a try."

"I thought you HATED Cleopatra!"

"No. Only the one at our local casino. I won big on it one time out by your college. I just keep thinking about Cleopatra, so I'm going to play it."

Well. Cleopatra didn't pay me anything, but I DID find THIS:

Can you see it there on the festive carpet, with the setting sun glinting in through the front doors? This is why Val is paid the big cents. She can spot a penny without bending over, and in the crazy pattern of a casino carpet!

Here's a better view, after a partial ample-rumpusing.

It was a heads-up 1996 penny, waiting for me to travel five hours and find it. Again, I have no idea why there are pennies on the floor by slot machines. By a cash-out machine, yeah. But not at a slot. This casino doesn't even have cash-out machines. You have to go to a cashier at a counter in the back of the casino.

And now, for the tale of Even Steven's betrayal...

When we checked in Tuesday evening at Downstream Casino, I told the lady that I needed three of the key-cards for the room. She handed them to me, each in their own paper sleeve. I walked across the wide walkway to Hick sitting on a bench, and held out the cards, fanned out in my hand, like a magician saying, "Pick a car, any card."

Hick took a card, then I held them out to The Pony. He selected one. We all pulled our rolling suitcases about a mile up to our room. Casinos are big places, you know. Hick used his card to open the door. When we got our stuff stashed away, and left for our rounds of other casinos, I tested my card to make sure it would unlock the door. I had a bad one once, and always test them. Don't want to come upstairs at 2:00 a.m. and not be able to get in. As I hobbled down the hall after Hick, on the way to the elevators, The Pony lagged back to test his card. When we were in the car, The Pony spoke from the back seat.

"Oh, Mom. When I took my card out of the paper to try it, look what I found..."

IT WAS A NICKEL! A nickel was down in the paper sleeve holding the room key-card! C'mon, people! We all know that nickel was meant for ME. But somehow The Pony selected it. I'm not counting that nickel in my totals, but I'm sure it was meant for me!

I posed it for a picture the next morning. The Pony was willing to give me the nickel, but it didn't seem right. You know I was green with envy, though!

  1. I didn't see that penny until the second photo, I kept staring at the carpet spots wondering which one might be the penny. I think it is odd that a nickel would be in with a key card, but it was nice of The Pony to offer it to you.

    1. Penny-finding is hard work! I knew where it was, and I have trouble seeing it in the first photo.

There is a slight possibility that the nickel was meant for The Pony. I find mostly pennies and dimes. Of course The Pony doesn't appreciate capturing a wild coin like I do.
