A Little Hick Told Me

That Hick. He's such a thoughtful, protective husband. WAIT! I really am going somewhere with this. Hick is always looking out for me. Like Friday morning.

I was peacefully snoozing at the Not-Heavenish hour of 7:15 a.m., which is the middle of the night for me. Dead asleep. The phone jolted me awake, heart racing. It took a couple rings to orient myself to where I was, at home, not in my dream world. The phone speaker announced: "Call from... Hick Thevictorian."

"Hello?"

"I wanted to be the first to tell you. I was in Casey's, and this woman came in and handed the guy $50. She said, 'I always tip 10 percent on my big lottery winners.' She won $5,000 on that green $10 ticket."

"I buy that ticket! I was going to Casey's today! But now I'm not!"

"Well. I just thought I'd tell you."

Because it couldn't wait until later in the day. He knows I go to town around 2:00 or later. But he sure thought I needed to hear it at 7:30 a.m.

My own personal doom-crier, looking out for my scratcher bankroll...

  1. I think he did the right thing because later in the day he might have forgotten and you would have been in there buying a losing ticket.

    1. I think Hick just couldn't wait to be the first one to bring me bad news! He COULD have forgotten, because he spends the mornings at his Storage Unit Store on Fridays, chewing the fat with his cronies, and making some sales (though not as many as a weekend).

  2. I think she shorted the Casey's guy some money if she was going to give 10%, but I'm sure he didn't complain.

    1. This is where I don't know if the error is in Hick's storytelling (it will make your head hurt!), or in his calculations.

Just today he swore there was a sign for a float trip on OUR ROAD. He said it three or four times, but when called on it (our gravel road properties have no river access), he named the county blacktop road.

I can figure out the TICKET MYSTERY in July, when I look up the map where winning tickets were sold in June. If this one is not mentioned for this Casey's, that means it was NOT $5,000, but "only" $500. The lottery only lists the winners of $1000 or more.
