Val's Last HOO-RAH Before She Buckles Down With Christmas Preparations

Every year I meet my best old ex-teaching buddy Mabel to exchange Christmas gifts and Chex Mix and chocolate covered cherries. I give her Chex, she gives me homemade chocolate cherries. Sometimes we go to her fabulous house, sometimes we meet for lunch. This year we decided on lunch.

It's about a 40 minute drive for us to get to Mabeltown. We met at 11:00 a.m. Hick decided he wanted breakfast food for lunch. He chose a breakfast platter in a skillet.

Hick had two eggs over easy, two sausage patties and hash browns. He chose to have it smothered in gravy. The other choice was a cheese-smothering. It came with a side of toast.

I chose my regular fare of a chicken quesadilla.

It had chunks of chicken, green peppers, tomatoes, and cheese. So delicious! I asked for extra salsa and sour cream. You can clearly see that only one tiny container of each is not enough for this generous quesadilla.

Mabel's husband had a cheeseburger and fries. I think Mabel had a brisket sandwich? Not sure. I could not see across the round table, and the long table of customers feeding next to us kept cackling loudly, so I couldn't hear Mabel's order. I did not feel comfortable taking a picture of their food!

Anyhoo... a good time was had by all, even counting the two HUGS that Mabel got away with. Val is not a hugger. We hadn't gotten together since last Christmas, so this was a real treat.

Val doesn't get out much...

  1. I'd have to say that Hicks breakfast looked quite tasty until he had it smothered in gravy. I can't imagine what it would have been like smothered in cheese. I like my stuff straight up - no smothering. How can he taste anything besides gravy, I wonder? Your meal did look much more appealing and yes, you would need at least 2 containers of each condiment to enhance the flavor satisfactorily. Yum. Ranee (MN)

    1. I agree. Gravy only belongs on top of a biscuit! Every time I have that quesadilla, I wish for more condiments. So I boldly asked this time. I think they charge more, but Mabel picked up the tab. I told her hubs that we would treat them to a $3 Senior Center lunch next time when it was our turn, heh, heh.

  2. What restaurant? This food looks delicious. TWO hugs? Did you lean back when she leaned in? Reciprocate or did you just give in? Have a great holiday. Been to the casino lately?

    1. It's down the road a piece from you, just off I-55 in Bloomsdale. The Kozy. You can find it online. It's a bit pricier than it used to be. I'm also a fan of the pretzel sticks with burnt ends in the dipping sauce, but last time they forgot my burnt end!

Mabel hugged me in the restaurant, and again beside the car upon leaving. She knows I hate hugs. She used to give me one every year at school, on my birthday. It makes her happy, so I submit. Grudgingly.

Haven't been since early Thanksgiving week, but we're taking The Pony and meeting Genius at RC on Tuesday. He's leaving to go back to Pittsburgh that day, so we go a bit early and have breakfast there before being robbed by the no-armed bandits.

Merry Christmas to you and Bill!

  3. That's not gravy, that's white sauce. Gravy is brown. And there is too much of it on that plate, you can't even see the eggs! Or the hash browns. I would have had the gravy just on the sausage patties. But I'm sure it was all delicious.

    1. You'll have to take that up with the menu-writer. Around here, white sauce is what goes into Fetuccini Alfredo, or in a tuna casserole. And nobody puts BROWN gravy on a chicken fried steak. It's gravy to us.

I suppose the amount of gravy is why the menu says the dish is SMOTHERED in gravy! Hick ate every crumb, and stopped short of licking the skillet. So I assume it was delicious.

  4. I don't like the gravy. I think it goes straight to the arteries, or it did in HeWho's case! I am not a big fan of condiments. I like to taste each individual food. he family of HeWho loves gravy! And they all have cardiac disease! Coincidence? Maybe.

    1. I've never been a gravy fan. I might have it once every few years on a biscuit, but that's plenty. My condiment downfall is mayo.
