It Ain't No Dog-in-a-Hat

New Year's Eve was a big event at Save A Lot. Not only did I see a dog in a hat, who was gone when I came out of the store... but I saw THIS!

Oh, I've seen limousines before. White and black. Sedan and JEEP-shaped. That might just be a thing around here. But even in Backroads, a limo at the Save A Lot is uncommon. Who pays for a limo and then buys New Year's Eve snacks in Save A Lot? They don't even sell alcohol!

Hick pointed out that there's a driver sitting in the limo, who looks like he's eating something. Surely there are easier parking lots to get in and out of, with better food choices. What'd he do, buy a loaf of bread and some lunch meat? There's a Subway down at the other end, to the right. It has better parking down there. But he could easily have taken that thing through the Dairy Queen drive-thru, and parked on their empty lot to feast on a Dilly Bar, or whatever treat he might have chosen.

I am reminded of the days when my mom used to care for my niece when she got off the bus after a hard half-day at kindergarten. They were always driving around on errands, and passed a truck pulling a horse trailer on the highway. It was one of those trailers that have a living compartment in the front end of the trailer, and room for maybe four or six horses. My mom loved to tell the story of how Niecy said,

"Gosh, Grandma, those people must have a really long horse!"

Maybe she would have thought the passenger of this limo had really long legs.

  1. I would imagine limos are rare anymore. Even here in California, there are not many around. If touring the wine country in style, then this would be okay.

    1. This is the first limo I've seen in a couple years. So I guess they are too expensive, or not cool these days.

  2. Perhaps he is on his way back from somewhere and didn't get paid enough so all he can afford is cheap snacks? I'll probably wonder about that for at least five minutes.

    1. It was 4:00 in the afternoon, on New Year's Eve. So I'm guessing he was on his way, not returning. Somebody who'd rent a limo and be done that early must go to bed with the chickens! Unless New Year's Eve was just a coincidence, and it was for a wedding.

  3. Some days you just gotta stretch your legs.

    1. For the price of a limo, you could probably pay two people to come to your house and pull your leg(s).

Our neighbor had excitement at Save A Lot. A woman driving a big SUV pulled into a space next to a shopping cart corral as
the guy was returning his cart, and ran over the guy's feet and knocked him under her vehicle. He and others were screaming. She was unaware, got out and headed for the store as people screamed. She got back in the behemoth and backed up over his other foot. Five broken bones. She should have been a limo passenger maybe.

    1. OH MY GOSH! I have a perpetual fear of running over someone in my large SUV. Backing up, mainly. Especially now that T-Hoe's back-up beeper doesn't work. But even when he was new, I refused to pull up by the door to drop off young Genius and The Pony at school, because I didn't want the responsibility of not-backing-over a kid as I left.

I'm surprised I didn't witness your friend's pedestrian faux pas. I've seen the police called over a scratched door, and two random people loading carts into the back of their truck. Save A Lot is where I'll hang out for inspiration, once The Pony moves out and leaves me story-less.

  5. Cheaper than getting a DUI! But a stretch is a little over the top.

    1. DUI is not a risk when drinking dirty-water cocktails! I don't think the dirty water shows up in a blood test.

  6. Whatever he was doing, coming or going, he is a thrifty one, shopping at Save A Lot. You have to respect that!

    1. Yes. Maybe Hick can interest him in a safe, livable house after he's done with Pony House.
