No good deed goes unpunished. You'd think Even Steven might be able to intercede on Hick's behalf. Perhaps at a later date, when he least expects it. Or perhaps I have already reaped the Even Steven benefits in my lottery winnings last week. Not that Hick is getting a cut.
You may recall that Hick has been helping out This Guy and This Guy's Wife, after their respective back (scheduled) surgery, and hip (accidental) surgery. They're the ones who sold us (deed pending!) the $5000 house. While at the hospital with This Guy for his back surgery, This Guy's Wife stepped outside for a break, fell down, and shattered her hip. That's a literal break!
Anyhoo... Hick has driven This Guy to his rehab appointments and to pick up groceries until he can now drive himself. Hick has driven This Guy's Wife to the city for follow-up appointments after her surgery. Last week, he drove them both to the last Wife appointment, and they took him out to lunch.
Sunday morning, when I entered the garage, I noticed this:
A-Cad's front tire is flatter than a Pony-made pancake! I doubt there's enough air left in it to blow the dust off New Delly's keyboard.
We don't begrudge the This Guys their ride to the doctor. After all, they sold us a $5000 house! [deed pending]
Hick and I don't plan our good deeds with profit in mind. Our neighbor Tommy stopped to tell Hick the other day, "I'm sorry I haven't paid you back for my car. I had to get a new roof, and then I was in the hospital, and I've been paying for that." Hick told him that's not a problem. We said in the beginning, when we gave him the $1000 car, that he could pay us back a little at a time when he was able. Actually, we never thought we'd see a cent, but he DID give us $25 after he got a job.
I think the Tommy good deed HAS gone unpunished. He's been working the same job (3rd try's a charm) for over a year now, and supporting himself. That investment has paid off big time in the quality of Tommy's life. The fact that his car is still running is a testament to Hick's car-buying savvy!
If only Hick could have extra-sweavery-perception when it comes to avoiding road hazards...
Hick is a saint and when I do something nice for someone I expect nothing in return either and sometimes I do get punished....
ReplyDeleteHick is indeed a people-helper. Every time we do something like that, or loan money, we do so without any expectations of repayment. The "punishments" don't discourage us from future good deeds, but help refine our efforts going forward, in who we choose to help.
Delete[deed pending]still? They need to get moving on that. Can the tyre be fixed or will Hick have to buy a new one? I'm happy that he's such a good helper-outer and doesn't expect anything from it. I'm the same except I don't help out if I can possibly avoid it. My mum was a helper-outer, but always kept in mind what she could get out of it. A bit like the godfather. I do you a favour-you owe me a favour.
ReplyDeleteI blame Hick for the deed delay. He's had it available, but decided to bypass a step and get it recorded directly from This Guy's Wife to HOS, leaving us out of the interim ownership.
DeleteHick gave the deed to a lawyer a couple months ago, to work on setting up a trust putting HOS's kids as the owners. It's a pretty detailed process, but will guarantee that Hick House is safe from liens and lawsuits until they are all legal adults, and it reverts to HOS himself. Paperwork is supposedly being delivered to us this week. Hick had given a deadline of July 1.
Hick is very generous with his time and efforts. I'm not so much a people person. My helpfulness is more in the form of providing monetary support. I know you've helped people with computer stuff, and taking care of that lady's bird. You're more of a helper than I am!
My hubby said, "Well, I found a spark plug in my tire." I said, "You always have to fire off a one upper." My guy talks just like yours.
ReplyDeleteA SPARK PLUG? I'm saying that all blustery, kind of spitting, like the guy in "Animal House" said, "PLEDGE PIN?"
DeleteThat's a new one. So far, my sister the ex-mayor's wife's BONE that gave her a flat tire was the most unique object I'd heard of.
