It's Better Than a Red Milk Crate Screwed to the Front of the House, But Not Quite as Useful

Ever since Genius's bison leather wallet, monogrammed, with RFID blocker, from Sharper Image, was partially eaten by our little dog Jack, I've recognized the need for a safe receptacle to receive packages.

I've been after Hick to put a box out by the garage for package delivery. Our dainty FedEx and UPS drivers don't much care to get out of their vehicles. They think tossing the package out into the driveway is sufficient. Our dogs think so, too.

Anyhoo, last week, Hick must have tired of hearing my suggestion, (can you imagine THAT?) and announced that he had put up a box for package delivery on the ugly, unwanted, Tom-Sawyer-makeover-needing picket fence.

As you might imagine, I was excited! Not excited enough to run to the door and look. I'm not a child on Christmas morning. But I was interested in scoping out that receptacle on my way to town the next day.

Let's just say that the reveal was anticlimactic.

Hick put up a regular mailbox. How is THAT going to receive a package? Sure, maybe a bison leather wallet, monogrammed, with RFID blocker, from Sharper Image. Or a package of checks. Even a TurboTax CD. But not a regular package.

I suppose it's better than a red milk crate screwed to the front of the house. But not quite as useful. Or maybe it IS just as useful.

  1. But that's obviously a mail box. Specifically for the U.S. Mail. Would FedEx or UPS or any of the other delivery persons think they could legally put anything in it?

    1. It's only a mailbox if the U.S. Mail delivers mail to it. Which they don't. They don't drive a mile + up a gravel road to 40 houses. That's why we have to get our mail out on the county blacktop road, or drive to the post office every day if we want to pay for a post office box.

Heh, heh! As if doing something LEGALLY would matter to anybody around here! The free advertising paper deliverer jams stuff in the roadside mailboxes.

Hick has a decorative mailbox beside the front door (can be seen in the last two links to the red milk crate post). A couple years ago, one of the deliverers stuck a small package in it. Which disturbed the wasps living in a nest on the underside of the lid.

    1. I agree. And they'll ignore it anyway, even if we tape a bright orange sign on it that says PACKAGES. They've never followed such directions in years past, as to where to leave the packages.

  3. I say to take a photo of where the pkgs end up with FedEx and UPS deliveries. Ours were tossed sometimes over the fence, ending up in a puddle. I sent the photos to the companies who mailed them. I got two refunds.

Amazon, on the other hand, is meticulous. THEY take a photo of it at the front door and email it to me.

    1. I'll do that, IF we can find them. Once the dogs claim them, you never know...

FedEx refused to refund on the bison wallet, declaring that leaning a shipping envelope against the door is proper delivery. I beg to differ. A box, maybe. But not an envelope. There were three chairs it could have been laid on, as well as an entire church pew!

  4. I'm surprised that you didn't immediately rush out to have a look. I would have, then I'd know right away to be telling Hick it isn't big enough and it needs a big letter sign saying FedEx/Amazon/ whatever else, STOP HERE! PLACE PACKAGE INSIDE BOX!

    1. I guess I'm so used to disappointment that I've given up on rushing to have a look at Hick's handiwork.

  5. I think we live with the same person. Maybe a flashing neon sign with an arrow? Don't suggest this as Hick probably has one and then you will have a long set of extension cords to maneuver around.

    1. Hick probably DOES have one! He has signs from Shell, and Save A Lot, and others I forget. Just happened to be there when the old signs were being taken down, and got them for FREE.

If he has the flashing arrow, he will at least be able to wire it correctly, having retired from doing such things for a living.

  6. I have a question...when you order stuff is there an option for 'delivery instructions' where you can ask that packages be left in the red milk crate? which I have just seen via internet time travel. Can't you contact FedEx and USP and let them know packages are to be left in the available mailbox/red crate? Are their delivery people ALL so afraid of dogs and of walking/driving a few extra yards?

    1. Yes. I tried it once, to change the day of delivery. I did it three days before the scheduled delivery, and NOTHING changed. So I don't trust it at all. You think you've solved the problem, and then you aren't alert.

I was in Oklahoma when I got an email that my CHECKS got delivered. They were in a cardboard envelope that was thrown in the driveway. HOS rode his (our) 4-wheeler down after dark, and found them, with tire tracks on the envelope. Maybe his, maybe not.

We can't be the only house that has dogs! The old UPS lady used to toss them dog biscuits. They loved her. She carried packages up on the porch, and put them on top of Juno's dog house by the back door. We miss her.

    2. Changing a delivery day is an exercise in futility, but when you originally order stuff you should get an option of where the package is supposed to end up. IN THE MILK CRATE!!

  7. That is smaller than our mailbox! We get a lot of mail here, as you can imagine. UPS, FedX and Amazon all come to the front door to deliver and get my autograph! I have them trained. They do not speed, nor do they run my stop sign. It only takes one call to their employers to make that happen. I give the drivers cookies at Christmas and they like me in spite of them selves!

    1. I really miss the UPS lady who tossed out dog biscuits! Our dogs loved her. Probably why they run to the UPS truck and put their feet up on the step. Probably why the UPS driver now is afraid of them!

Hick called to complain about the FedEx driver who left the trench in our front yard from getting stuck, after trying to turn around there instead of using the driveway and carport. Hick went to the top, and got an offer of compensation for a landscaper to fix the problem. Hick didn't trust that he would be reimbursed, so said he'd do it himself. No mention of consequences for the driver.
