Gambling On Santa

What a difference two years makes! We used to take a casino trip to Oklahoma over the Christmas break, with my sister the ex-mayor's wife, the ex-mayor himself, and Genius and his Friend if they could make it after starting the working life after graduation. The Pony would meet us there, on his way home from college for the holidays. We're not going anywhere this year. But we DID go to our new favorite casino this week, for a day trip. It's Century Casino, in Cape Girardeau.

Santa was there to greet us. Not so much to greet us, as to wave goodbye. Either to US, or our MONEY! Santa is not facing either door. Behind him there is the main entrance. I took this photo while walking from the bathrooms by the side entrance. Santa is facing into the casino turnstile entrance. So I guess he is waving goodbye as you come out.

There's a tasteful little Christmas tree in the background, over by the front window. Santa himself is a mystery to me. WHY is he wearing a grass skirt and a Hawaiian shirt? He even does the hula at intervals, shakin' his booty in a vibratory manner. He has a nice sleigh full of beach balls. And three palm trees for shade. I DON'T KNOW WHY! I looked on the website to see if there's a theme for December. Not so much. All I could find was on the calendar, where December 26 was labeled as Paradise of Prizes. If I didn't know better, I'd say someone was cutting corners on decorations!

Not that I'm being critical. I'm used to more effort in conveying a holiday theme. Like at Downstream Casino in Oklahoma, near Joplin, Missouri. Where we used to stay on our holiday CasinoPaloozas.

Like this sweet Santa who greeted us (without a hula dance) in 2018.

Or this deer old St. Nick who was there in 2019. Quite a contrast from the blowup dude with a surfboard and grass skirt.

Who knew that Oklahoma was so much more sophisticated than Missouri...

  1. I think they may have got a good storage unit price on the hula Santa.

    1. Heh, heh! Santa DOES look like something Hick would sell. Santa also looks a little like HICK!

  2. Clearly that Santa is taking a break from his Hawaiian home, perhaps he wants to experience snow this year.
I had my huge old (almost 50) atlas mended so it is no longer falling apart and was able to find Cape Girardeau. Looking up places I read about is a hobby I have.

    1. Santa might soon feel a draft up his grass skirt! Cold front is moving in tonight. Just rain, I think.

I'll give you a tip on my supersecret blog in case you want to look up where Backroads really is!

    2. Found you, and this is why I love this big old atlas, it has millions of the tiny towns that just don't make it into the smaller or newer atlases. It even has the tiny village I was born in just outside of Hamburg Germany.

    3. I like old road maps. You unfold them, and can find what you're looking for within a minute. When I try to look up an area online, it takes me a half hour, sorting through various maps, zooming in and out.

    4. I mean I found your town, not your actual home. It's a very woody area, looks nice from above.

    5. We ARE very woody, except the town part by the Gas Station Chicken Store stoplight.

  3. Mali kaliki maui...or however that song goes, is what I think of when I look at this Ho Ho in a Hula skirt,in a place where palm trees sway.
I have a wonderful photo with an elegant contemporary background taken at a casino in Tunica years ago. is this a casino owned by Isle of Capri? Thus the beach theme? Having any luck?

    1. You've solved the mystery! This casino USED to be part of the Isle of Capri. In fact, it was called The Isle Cape Girardeau. Then they transferred ownership. So I guess they're using THE OLD DECORATIONS!

Who would ever imagine a casino cutting corners with expenses?

Not much luck. There will be a casino story coming up.

  4. I thought they were giving away a trip to Hawaii with the hula skirt on Santa.
