This Old Spouse

Here's a picture of Hick's newest find.

Looks kind of spooky there. I think he set it on Gassy G when he came home from the auction with it last week. Hick was beside himself! He got it from some guy who bought a whole kit 'n' caboodle of stuff at an old farmhouse auction. Lots of stuff like this lamp, and a bunch of cast iron. Which includes two witch's cauldrons! That's not Hick's wording. He just called them big cast-iron pots like we have leaning up against the garage in the rock garden. Hick has enough cast iron to sink a battleship. But he was grousing that he could have had this whole lot of farmhouse stuff for $1200. And he knows he can make money on it. He estimates that he could get $2000.

Hick told his Auction Buddy about this farmhouse collection, and the guy said he wished Hick had bought it, and he would have given him half the cost, and they could have split the profits. I guess one could have the kit, and the other the caboodle!

Sometimes, it's a good thing that Hick is not rollin' in dough from his new storage container store business.

Hick thinks this lamp is worth around $75. It looks kind of rough. He says it's a Dietz lamp. He thought it was an old railroad lantern, but he can't find any markings about the railroad on it. He paid $40 for the lamp and three wire egg baskets. Hick doesn't need egg baskets, because we have two of them from my grandma's farm. Friday night, he sold the three farmhouse egg baskets for $31. And he still has the lamp.

Yes, Hick is branching out into the auction arena. He said he sold $155 worth of junk stuff at the auction Friday night. The auction people take 18% commission. Then Hick bought $34 worth of junk stuff. He said he cashed out with $94 and change.

I'm pretty sure he's having a blast.

Let the record show that Hick sometimes practices fuzzy math. Oh, he's perfectly capable of calculating to the last red cent. But if he picks up a pizza and adult beverages at Casey's, and it costs $21.37, he is likely to inform me that it cost $25.00, and he'd like to be reimbursed for the outlay from his cash allowance money.

Whoopsie! Hick looked at his receipts from the auction, and discovered that he'd been given Auction Buddy's tickets, which would explain the fuzzy math. There was some confusion about their seller numbers being 4 and 5, and their table numbers being transposed. He's going to clear it up on Wednesday when they take their next set of merchandise to get it ready. Good thing they made about the same amount that night. Less than $10 difference. That might have added to the confusion, though.

  1. I'm going to reiterate. I think Hick should team up with those blonde twins from "Antiques Roadshow." What a threesome (hee hee, I said threesome) they would be.

    1. While my 13-year-old self giggles at that thought, my adult self knows that I'll be my own biggest customer for the Brain Bleach I will be selling from the counter of my proposed handbasket factory.

  2. I believe Hick is going to come out money ahead on the lamp even with the table mix up, and with his fuzzy math and only 10 bucks difference he could settle for a twenty and come out even at the auction.

    1. I think Hill will come out okay. He has a good eye for junk.

  3. Sounds like Hick had a really good time besides many good finds!

That lantern looks quite old; it's too bad if there's no marking of info on it, because it there was it would probably be worth much more.

I sure would like to see those cauldrons, it sounds like they must be HUGE!

    1. There must be some kind of marking, because Hick knew it was a Dietz lamp. I never heard of them. He just said nothing specified that it was for the railroad, which is what he was thinking.

If I remember, I'll get a picture of our own cauldron. It's been there so long, I don't even think about it.

  4. It sort of looks like an old railroad lamp except it appears to have a wall bracket.

    1. I see the bracket now. It looks like it WAS attached to something. Hope Hick doesn't attach it to the wall of his freight container future garage. His trusses should be delivered tomorrow so he can start on the roof.

  5. That lamp looks like it would be really nice when it's cleaned up, maybe polished a bit. I'd like a witches cauldron or two myself, but not so huge that I couldn't lift them. Although that wouldn't be a problem if I was just using them in the garden.

    1. I think Hick has ours turned on its side so it looks like stuff is spilling out. Don't remember. That's how much attention I pay to Hick's landscaping. And I even walk past that area twice a day!
