After asking for a discount on my expired slaw mix on Friday, I bought my scratchers from the machine, and proceeded back to T-Hoe. I recorded my transaction in my checkbook register, and was surprised at the total. $15.04. Huh. That seemed cheap, considering how I'd bought bananas, pepper jack cheese, discounted slaw mix, and three six-packs of Diet Mountain Dew.
WAIT A MINUTE! They had only charged me for ONE six-pack of Diet Mountain Dew! Oh, no! That was because, as usual, I'd only set one of the six-packs on the conveyor, intending to mention as it was scanned that I had THREE.
In all the talking, I had neglected to mention the other two six-packs in the cart. You know how elderlies despise hefting heavy items onto the conveyor. But I always tell them. Until now!
My knees did not feel like walking back inside and waiting for somebody to come to the service desk. The lady who would do that was busy pulling the expired slaw mix from the cooler. I vowed to take my receipt with me on my next trip into 10Box, when my legs were fresh, whether it be for lottery or shopping, and explain my criminal faux pas, and pay for those two "free" six-packs of Diet Mountain Dew.
Is this a logical decision? I do not want to be a thief. They are SO nice to me at 10Box. I'm not out to defraud them. I know it won't show up until they do an inventory, or perhaps have an audit. But I want it off my conscience! Stealing, whether by choice, or by neglect, is NOT good karma!
Meanwhile, I had stowed those groceries on the passenger side of T-Hoe. Hick was not available for carrying-in, due to his grilling for the elderlies at the Senior Center. So I only took in one six-pack of Diet Mountain Dew. In fact, that was the only reason I did ANY shopping that day. Hick was out of Diet Mountain Dew.
Oh, he said I didn't have to. Said he could buy a single bottle at the Backroad's Casey's. But you know how it is. Hick's absolving me of shopping before my intended trip was dripping with much put-upon-ness of the permanent victim variety. I know it well! I use this tactic all the time for my own benefit.
Anyhoo... those two six-packs of Mountain Dew are riding along with me on my trips to town, MOCKING me for being A THIEF!!!
I can't wait until our bananas are used up, and I go back to 10Box for more. At which time I will ask for somebody to come to the service desk, and show them my receipt, and pay for the STOLEN two six-packs of Diet Mountain Dew.
It will be a load off my conscience.
Would you go back and pay? Right then, or the next time? Or would you just figure it was an oversight by the cashier, and revel in your windfall?
I would go back and pay--next time I had to go in. That would be too hard to go in twice. I have done the same thing with someone removing everything, bagging it and placing the bags in the basket of the electric cart. I always wonder how the person managed to miss something and then place the bag on top of the item without seeing it.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have every intention of paying, but not at the expense of added pain on my already-overtaxed knees that very day.
DeleteIn my mind there's no way I would consider not paying for the soda! I have a horrible memory, so would have immediately gone back and made things right. However, I can also understand not wanting to make the extra walk.
ReplyDeleteGood to know that others are also honest! At least there's no statute of limitations on me paying for my "shoplifting!"
DeleteHi Val, It would depend on how tired I was and how crowded the store was as to whether I'd go right back in or wait until my next visit. Especially, if it was a store that I visited on a regular basis. If I seldom visited the store, I'd go right back in. Two six-packs of Mtn Dew is too large a purchase for me to not pay.
ReplyDeleteI definitely understand that reasoning. I go in 10Box at least twice a week for groceries, and sometimes more just for scratchers. With it being the weekend, I figure the person I'll need to square my debt with won't be working until a weekday.
DeleteI would go back and pay right away, because my knees are still good, but if I'd got all the way home first I would probably phone in and let them know I'd pay on my next trip. Or just make a special trip next time I go shopping even without needing anything from that particular store. Your unintentional theft does not make you a thief. A real thief wouldn't care or feel at all guilty.
ReplyDeleteGood to know I'm not a REAL thief, heh, heh! I'm planning to go on Tuesday or Wednesday. I have plans Monday over in Sis-Town at the bank, so no extra errands that day.
DeleteI did a little online checking yesterday and found that 20oz equals our Australian pint, while US pints are only 16oz. then while I was at the supermarket I checked the soft drinks aisle. We don't have Mountain Dew, but I did notice a sale on 12-packs of regular Coca Cola, $11.40, BUT they are the tiny 300ml bottles which is about a half pint size, the regular price on those 12-packs is $19!! For six "pints" of Cola! There were other soft drinks on sale, some were $2.40, but they were 4-packs of something, maybe lemon Solo in the 375ml bottles
ReplyDeleteI don't know what the prices would be in a store like Cheap as Chips or even if they sell soft drinks. At Service Station outlets prices are usually higher than regular supermarkets.
The price on my receipt for the one six-pack is $4.15. With the 10 percent they charge at the register, it would be $4.565. State, county, and city taxes add up to another 6.35 percent.
DeleteSo I owe the store 29 cents tax on each of the two six-packs. That means I "stole" $9.71 from 10Box! Which I will embarrassed-ly pay upon my return!
