Hick House Downstairs: Living Room 03-14-19

The kitchen and bathroom have been the main focus of Hick and HOS's efforts. Here are a few photos I took last week to show more of the downstairs layout.

Here is more of the living room, looking in from the entryway. HOS has been painting the ceiling. The front window is fine, just has a shade over it. Those two leaning windows are going elsewhere. The black frame will be in the master bedroom, and the other is going upstairs to replace a broken window, I think in the Fleetwood Mac bedroom, which is on the uphill side of the house.

If you stand with your back to that bright window, you can see the front door and entryway. Plastic is covering the archway to the master bedroom, to keep out sawdust from Hick's temporary workroom. The way Hick described it, I thought the archway was actually arched. Apparently not. The plan is for shelves here, for the living room, and in the bedroom on the other side. If Hick runs out of time and/or money, he will use drywall to close the opening.

Here's the entry to the kitchen, with shy Hick hiding behind the wall. I'm pretty sure he thought he was in the picture. That door behind him leads to the hall and bathroom. The dark corner is where the dirty sink was removed.

More from the kitchen tomorrow.

  1. HICK may be a close runner up for the Property Brothers. He does know his stuff; he just doesn't have a big budget.

    1. Hick is all about getting a return on his investment. He has said that if he was flipping Hick House for the market, rather than a bargain home for HOS, he would buy some items rather than use what he has laying around. HOS would rather have the bargain than the frills.

  2. THis reminds me of the original "This Old House" with Bob Vila and "Sweat equity", before they went all high end and sweat equity went hired professional, top line stuff and BIG MONEY and ruined a good show.

I would tune into "This Old $5000 House" staring Hick every week!

    1. Hick would not disappoint! HOS, a man of few words, might not be an entertaining sidekick worthy of a weekly show. He'd be okay in an occasional guest appearance.

  3. I like the idea of shelves on both sides of the archway and hope Hick has enough time to get that done. I was really happy to find some built in shelves in the bedroom here when I moved in, it meant I could unpack a box of my favourite books right away. After making up the bed which is always the first thing done when moving.

    1. The shelves of Hick/HOS House would likely be lined with collected NASCAR Hot Wheels than books!

    1. That's the plan! Hick is slowing down on his photo-bragging. Now he's about to get into the wiring, which will not be very photogenic. Nor will HOS's plumbing.

  5. Does Hick watch HGTV? Texas Flip and Move is a good one. They get some real doozies at auction and then pay a small fortune to move them. Last one was so bad they ended up bulldozing it down and starting from scratch. I would be forever bemoaning the money spent moving it!
They still turned a profit, but all I could think about was that they would have make a much larger profit had they just built a house and not bought that one.

    1. Yes, we watch Texas Flip and Move. Of course, the Snow family is also in the house-moving business. So there's that. They can discount moving it to the work-on yard, and maybe make extra profit on moving it for the new owner.
