Just a Minor Punishment for This Good Deed

I nabbed the closest handicap parking space Monday at the Sis-Town Country Mart. AND somebody had conveniently left a cart next to it. So I wheeled myself to the double doors. Not an easy feat, as that store sits atop a blacktop slope into the regular parking lot. I had to lean a bit to maintain my balance. Still, better with a cart than just walking with a purse swinging from my hand.

Anyhoo... when I came out, a truck parked in the space next to T-Hoe as I was putting my purchases in his rear. A teenage gal and an older lady with a cane got out. They commented on the pickup truck that barreled past, roaring the engine. Nobody in that pickup had been shopping. The lot is a shortcut from the road by the local high school.

When the cane lady walked past, I offered her my cart.

"Would you like to push this in? I know that I like to lean on it while I'm walking."

"Oh, yes. Thank you."

I turned and gave her my cart/walker while the Young Gal went on walking. She might have been the daughter, or a granddaughter. As I turned back to close T-Hoe's hatch, I almost fell!

"Whoops! I keep forgetting that my balance isn't what it used to be."

"Are you all right?"

"Yes. I'm fine. I have to remember to move slower."

"I definitely know what you mean," said the Cane Lady, mosying along, her cane ensconced in the cart.

A catastrophe narrowly avoided. If I had fallen, I don't know how far I might have rolled down that slope!

  2. Perhaps you should carry your cane for when you relinquish your trolley/cart.

    1. I am trying not to give in to taking my cane everywhere. Only when I cover a lot of distance, like at the casino. I'm okay as long as I don't do a lot of standing, walk on uneven ground, and take my time.

  3. I almost fall when I fail to remember my balance is not what it should be.

    1. Yes. I feel more steady if I just have a hand on something. Not necessarily leaning on it. Just getting my bearings. Like dragging it along the side of T-Hoe as I walk back to the door.

  4. I haven't had to use a cane much, but I know I will hate it! No need in the tiny house, there is always something close to grab. I do use a walking stick to go up the embankment to my shed. I leave it at the bottom when I leave to go back down and at the top while I am in the shed. Same thing when you think about it, but "walking stick" makes me sound like young robust hiker!!

    1. "Walking stick" makes me think of Kramer, wearing the Technicolor Dreamcoat, strolling along with the exotic silver-handled walking stick Elaine was writing ad copy for at J. Peterman.
