Hick the Do-Gooder Drives Again

A couple weeks ago, one of Hick's buddies talked to him down at the SUS2 (Storage Unit Store 2). Said he had been to the eye doctor because he was having issues. Seeing squares over things, needing to tilt his head to the side to see better. The local eye doctor referred him to a doctor in the city. But he didn't have a way to get there.

Hick said he would take him to the city for his appointment. Eye Buddy said he didn't want to impose. He'd find a way to get there. It's an hour drive from here. An hour twenty minutes from the SUS2.

A couple days ago, Eye Buddy talked to Hick again.

"I know I said I didn't need you to take me to my eye appointment. But I really don't have any other way to do it. I hate to ask, but I don't think I can get there any other way."

"I said I'd take you, and I will. It's not big thing. Not a problem. Just let me know the day and time."

Hick says it is sometime next month. He doesn't mind at all. Must be all that good karma that brings Hick so many freebies.

  3. When I had a problem like that, I had to make a dash to eye hospital an hour away. I was in danger of losing my vision due to macula pulling retina from back of eye. We have an eye hospital in Birmingham, actually stays open all night, an ER for eye problems, accident or like I had.

I hope the guy makes it a month with sight intact.

Yes, Hick is a good guy.

    1. I don't know how long the guy has had this problem. He might have waited so long to go to the eye doctor that a referral is not a matter of immediacy. I've never heard of an eye emergency facility. Guess you never know until you need one!

Hick and his two brothers grew up with a blind dad and a sick mom. They had to hitchhike to get their groceries, unless they could afford a cab. No indoor bathroom. Took a bath in a washtub. Hick understands how much it means to somebody when he can help them out.

    2. It is a multi-story eye hospital with emergency room. The only times I have been there have been middle of the night ER visits. Those visits are scary. It is Callahan Eye Hospital.

Some people who grow up in poverty try to escape the 'stigma' as they perceive it and live a life disconnected to their background. Then, there are people like Hick. He is helping at ground level people with needs. Good for him.

    3. Hick should be pictured in a dictionary (remember those?) beside "down-to-earth."

  4. It seems that those who have "Been there" are the first to lend a hand

    1. Hick remembers the people who lent a hand, and the doctor who said he and his brothers "wouldn't amount to nothing." One retired from the Air Force, and the other was head of security in Las Vegas at Circus Circus. Hick is no slouch, either.

  5. Hick is good guy. HeWho is, too. I am going in tomorrow to see if I have covid. I don't think this is the flu. The constant headache and fatigue have overwhelmed me. I just can't seem to get over it.

    1. Despite their annoyingness to us, they are good to others. The Pony took over two weeks to feel better after his illness with a positive test. Fatigue and cough were his main complaints.

  6. thecontemplativecat her. Hick has a generous heart and soul. Poor guy. Being blind is a big fear for all of our generation.

    1. I'm sure Hick understands that fear, having vision in only one eye since his bottle rocket incident at age 14.

  7. To not encourage the big head syndrome, I have to say that Hick is quite a swell guy and I love how he just puts it out there that he will give this guy a ride, whenever the time comes. No issues. No complaint. No hemin or hummin around. Just does it. He is a rare breed, and we need more like him in this world we live in.

    1. Yes, Hick is a gem, and the world would be better off with more of him. I'm not sure I could survive having more of him around the house, though!

  8. He is a good soul helping like that. I know if I were seeing squares over things etc I'd be at the eye doctor the very next day.

    1. That old guy might have called to make an appointment with the local eye doctor, but maybe they couldn't get him in for weeks or months. When they have to reschedule one of Hick's appointments, it's usually a month or more later.

    1. There might be some, but even The Pony and friends don't use them. Preferring instead to designate a driver on their rare nights out. I don't think this old guy would take one to the city 80 miles away.

Most of the elderlies around here catch the mini bus to the local hospital and appointments. I don't think it goes to the city. I think it has to be scheduled at least a week in advance.
