Hick House Makeover: Bedroom 1

Lest you forget, Hick House was purchased on February 25 for $5000. Cash. To turn into a safe, livable house that would pass city inspection, with a remodel budget of $2500. Nothing fancy. Not intended to flip for profit, but to trade to HOS (Hick's Oldest Son) for a travel trailer and renovation labor.

Let's start with the pictures of Bedroom 1 on the first walk-through of Hick House. This is the upstairs bedroom on the downhill side of the house. A window of which can you see in previous pictures of the siding. It has another window on the back of the house, above where Hick painted trim on the back porch windows. Just so you have your bearings.

Back on February 25, Bedroom 1 looked like this:

That's standing in the sunroom, looking in, towards the back of the house. The door at the back right goes into the other bedroom, and the one in the foreground is a closet.

This was taken from the back wall, looking towards the door leading to the sunroom. Bedroom 1 was probably in the best shape of any room in the house. It mainly needed paint and window replacement.

Hick took care of the window, turning two old ones into a single newer one. He trimmed it out, but painting was just a rough coat.

More recently, Bedroom 1, which will belong to HOS's teenage daughter, received some fresh paint.

That's the inside wall, with the door leading into the other bedroom. I liked the green door, as did Hick and HOS, but Mrs. HOS did not. Hick arrived last week to find that it had been painted purple.

And some artwork added to the walls. Not my cup of tea, but apparently the taste of the future room-dweller. Hick mentioned to HOS that he was not a fan, nor was anyone he showed the picture to. HOS said that everyone HE showed the picture to loved it. And said, "Wait a minute, did you show it to OLD PEOPLE?" Yes. That explains it all.

Hick scored a roll of free carpet from back-creek neighbor Bev on Thursday. He and HOS moved it to the house, but it was still waiting for installation (by HOS and a buddy) when Hick last saw it Friday around noon. The original plan was to put the carpet in Bedroom 1, but that might have changed by now, in favor of area rugs, if HOS wants the carpet in the living room.

The city inspector is coming to Hick House on Monday morning, ready or not.

Tomorrow: the other upstairs bedroom.

  1. Well that explains it, teenagers love their purple.

    1. I don't mind the purple. My sister had purple carpet in her room at that age.

  2. That room should pass inspection for sure.

    1. The inspector cancelled the appointment! At least the city did. Called Hick and rescheduled for Tuesday at 10:00. Hick just called me and said the city was trying to reschedule for WEDNESDAY! He told them he was going out of town (a little fib), so they're sending the other inspector: A WOMAN!

Not to malign my own kind, but a woman is pickier than a man, I think...

  3. My brother is a fixer upper kind of guy, and when the inspector came to see his room addition, the guy was most impressed with his rigging. I am certain Hick will be the talk of the town with those improvements.

    1. Maybe with that old inspector, with whom he'd cultivated a rapport. Not sure what the lady will say. She talked to Hick on the phone, and said, "What was he going to inspect?" I hope she looks at the list Hick was given for repairs.

  4. Those purple walls looked so much better with the green door. Oh well, I don't have to live in it, so I have no say.

    1. I'm even fine with the purple door, just not the wall art. And more has been added, increasing my not-fine-ness exponentially. But... I don't live there either. So I'm keeping my mouth shut. But nobody can silence my fingers here!

  5. Purple is one of my favorite colors and I like it paired with green. But, I am old.

    1. Apparently, we old people have strange tastes. Like expecting teenagers not to draw on freshly-painted, renovated walls...
