Catching Up With Hick

Hick is pretty easy to catch these days. He's getting around better on his bum leg butt leg-butt, but definitely not at full speed yet. His doctor nurse practitioner told him that he probably tore a hamstring muscle. That there's not much she can do about it. If he had torn away part of the bone where the tendon attaches, the type of injury that requires surgery and a 6-12 month recovery period...he would not be able to walk. So she wasn't going to send him for an MRI. She said if he's not better in 3 or 4 weeks, to come back, and she will schedule some tests. She said he should take ibuprofen for the pain and inflammation.

Hick's nurse practitioner said that he should put ice on his injured area for 20 minutes, then heat for 20 minutes, then ice again, etc. Which is EXACTLY what I told him to do, when he was plopping himself on a heating pad for hours in the La-Z-Boy.

"I told her you said that. And she said, 'Go home and tell your wife she was RIGHT!'"

And Hick DID!

I don't remember if I posted a picture or Hick's 1980 Olds Toronado back when he got pulled over for having historic plates without tags. But here it is now. Or again.

We still don't know if Hick needs tags for it, or if the historic plates are enough.

Hick has been taking Neighbor Tommy to the store every weekend. I stop short of that, even though I go to town every day. I just don't feel like it's appropriate for me to do it, though Tommy is always polite to me, and I'm not afraid of him. He's kind of from a different era. My first clue was when he called one morning to ask about getting his mail, and said, "Oh, so you're the little woman." I have picked up his mail for him a couple times (even though it's on the other end of the gravel road, two miles from here, and not in the same mailbox row as EmBee). Again, he's asked for a ride to get his mail, and I told him that Hick was working, but I'd pick it up for him and bring it to his house. He comes out to get it, so I don't have to go inside.

Last Saturday, Tommy called shortly after 8:00 a.m., to ask if Hick could take him to Walmart. I told him that Hick had just left, and was having breakfast in town. Tommy said he'd been waiting for a decent hour to call, and should have called sooner. This morning, Tommy called at 5:51. That's A.M.! We let the machine pick up, then Hick called him back later and took him to town. He pointed out to Tommy that he leaves for work at 6:00 a.m. on workdays, but that on the weekends, he doesn't get up quite that early.

Hick has been painting and furnishing his Railroad Car Shack. I don't think he's sent me pictures of the outside since it was painted, but here it is with the sliding door.

Here are a couple of shots from the inside.

Of course, no Railroad Car Shack would be complete without Thomas the Tank Engine.

Thomas looks pretty lonely there on his shelf, but Hick has more elaborate displays.

It's still a work in progress, I think. He's looking through the boys' toys for display material.

I'm glad Hick has a hobby, even it IS building themed shacks. Because this morning, he mentioned that once he is fully retired, he'd really like to go out and do things, with ME!!!

One thing he's NOT going to do with ME is attend Crazy Dude's hearing Monday morning with three other neighbors, in support of Bev.

I'm pretty sure there's going to be a story when Hick gets home.

  1. I can see it now, once Hick retires fully he will be going on down to the gas station chicken store with you for lottery tickets and fountain cokes, 44 oz diet I believe for you, and then you both could go....

Sorry probably shouldn't have gone there yet since you two haven't.

I can't wait for the story when Hick gets back from Crazy Dudes hearing, I'm just hoping they get some control on him, Crazy Dude that is not Hick.

    1. NO! Just a few hours ago, Hick told me he has been thinking about starting a walking program every day. You know what THAT means. I will have to get up pretty early in the morning to get my walk in before Hick wakes up.

Hick called me the minute he got out of court. Story coming up.

    1. Well...YOU probably had toys as a child, and Hick did not.

He had just finished polishing his Toronado when he sent me that picture. You can still see the shop towels on the hood.

  3. Does Hick keep the house as neat as he keeps his train shack?

    1. I see you've forgotten about the banana peel I found stuffed in the cushions of the La-Z-Boy, and the toenail clippings I found in the candle on the mantel. So the answer would be NO.

  4. I feel a story coming on after the court appearance. Listen, Little Woman, you be careful out there.

It is a matter of time before Hick will be trailing you like Jack if he retires full time. I know of what I speak.

Hope his hiney-ooch heals soon. he ACTUALLY admitted you were right?

    1. The Little Woman will dutifully transcribe her man's tale of court proceedings.

I already asked Hick when he's going to grow up, and stop being such a toddler who needs my attention and approval for every little thing he does. He did not give a definitive answer.

Hick only admitted I was right because his doctor--I mean Nurse Practitioner--told him to!

  5. At first, just for a minute, I thought you meant Hick had a shack made from a genuine old railroad car. I thought, wow, that's cool. Then I saw the pictures and realised my mistake. I like the Old Toronado, very sleek and a nice colour too.

    1. Shhh! If Hick thinks that is possible, he WILL HAVE ONE!

Hick got his Toronado for free, from his boss, after the boss's dad died. The boss had no use for the car, and rewarded loyal Hick with it.

  6. First of all, my condolences because of Hick NOT being a candidate for surgery. What heaven that would be for you--Hick's Little Woman--getting the privilege of waiting on him for 6-12 months while he recuperated. Too bad you missed out on that loveliness...

Secondly, in regards to the wall behind Thomas... I hope that wall will be painted soon. Such a rough-looking background for such a valuable display. That is NOT the kind of shack-y ambiance I plan on paying for when I buy a tour ticket.

Finally, I imagine Tommy is like a Boo Radley character. Am I far off?

    1. You are such a nurturer, Madam! If Hick should ever have the surgery, I will send him to convalesce in YOUR home, where he would get much better care than I care to give him!

That was an early photo of Thomas, and the wall has since been painted white. We have jacked-up the tour ticket prices accordingly.

That classic mocks me from my bookshelf, as I have always meant to read it, but haven't gotten around to it. Haven't even seen the movie. So I can't comment as to Tommy's comparison to Boo Radley.

Let's just say that you can be talking away with Tommy, not understanding why people have a certain opinion of him, and then he says something that totally makes you KNOW why.

    1. YES! If you feel a bit wobbly, that might mean that the Earth shifted slightly on its axis.

  8. I really like our nurse practitioner. They seem to have just the right balance of medical knowledge and common sense. Like telling him to tell you that you were right.

    1. I know, right? This one is some kind of MENSA candidate, what with that insight as to my correctness!
