A Hick-Up of Laminate Proportions

Hick had a routine medical appointment on Wednesday. It caused him to miss one of his favorite elderly lunches:

Chopped Steak w/Mushrooms
Mashed Potatoes
Savory Carrots
Roll
Strawberry Shortcake OR Fruit

That was too bad. But not the worst thing that happened on Wednesday. Hick went by Bargain House before driving the 30 minutes to his appointment. He made a worrisome discovery, and sent me a text:

"Found water leak this morning made big mess on floor in first bedroom I finished. Hopefully won't be too bad when I get it all apart. Can't get ahead for getting behind."

Well. I disagree about that. It would be easier to get ahead with only ONE job to do, that being Bargain House, until it's done. But I'm not one to kick a Hick when he's down.

Hick said he can't even blame this issue on Old Buddy. That it was because, on a day Old Buddy called in sick, Hick worked by himself. He was doing the plumbing and didn't shove one pipe far enough into another. Thus this leak.

Hick says the plan is to use Old Buddy's "salamander," which is gas-powered, to put under the house and stream hot air in to dry out the flooring. I think he will also be taking it apart, but not sure if that's before or after.

Oh, well. It's only money. Only one room. Things could have been worse. I hope they're careful with that salamander. We don't need to burn the house down, or inhale carbon monoxide!

  1. Reminds me of a time when we moved to Austin, Texas and a heavy rainstorm flooded our ground floor apartment. Many fans for many days dried out what wasn't ruined. We soon moved.

    1. It's good that you got dried out and moved out! When I returned to college for my junior year, my home-town roommate and I had rented a ground floor apartment. We'd moved in a few things already. Arrived to find standing water on the carpet. Nothing was ruined, because so little was there. The legs of the furniture kept the cushy parts dry. Only my wooden rocking chair was IN the water, and it dried out fine.

It took both sets of parents threatening the landlord, but that same day, we got a second floor apartment at the front of the building. It was a pain carrying my 10-speed bicycle up and down the stairs every day, but it WAS a nicer apartment.

  2. Didn't properly connect those pipes? This is the first instance of shoddy work I have heard, Hick usually doesn't make mistakes like this. I hope it's an easy fix once it gets dried out.

    1. I was more surprised that Hick ADMITTED his mistake! He acts like it's not hard to fix, just time-consuming.
