little stick of doublemint gum
thought it was
just the paper
but no
the whole stick of gum
brittle to the touch
carried in her clutch bag
down inside the purse
for just a garlicky emergency
perhaps
but sadly no rain hat
all folded and slid into
a flat packet
Prepared for a garlic emergency but not rain. Always thinking of others before herself. Have you found the giant stash of greeting cards and letters? They're a challenge to sort in so many ways.
ReplyDeleteWhy does this remind me of your mom? Was it her gum?
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling this was something you found... and a memory surfaced?
ReplyDeleteSomething your mom saved?
Leenie,
ReplyDeleteNo, we haven't found the greeting cards or letters, but we found a couple of manilla envelopes of grandkid artwork.

Stephen,
She carried it in a little purse that fit inside her purse, and it was in the safe. So I'm assuming it was Mom's, unless she carried it since before my dad passed away, in case he wanted gum. We found a wooden toothpick holder she carried for him. Because one never knows when one might need to pick one's teeth.

Sioux,
I don't know so much that she SAVED it, as she never discarded it. At first I thought it was a prank thing, like when kids take out the gum, and offer the wrapper to somebody.
Because Sis said to me, "Want some gum?" And it was that petrified Doublemint.
