Stake N Steak (Part 2: The Steak)

The Pony had been yearning for a steak dinner the first night of CasinoPalooza 3, but agreed to a deli meal of chicken tenders due to our location at suppertime. So on Sunday, I felt obligated to get him that steak. We had a big breakfast at the hotel buffet, skipped lunch, and ended up having that steak for lupper. The meal between lunch and supper.

It was around 4:00 when we had a chance to pencil in lupper. We put Friend on the task of looking up steakhouses in Miami, Oklahoma. That's pronounced "Mi AM Uh," (to save you future embarrassment if you find yourself in that neck of the plains).

"I see one that kind of looks like a bar, called The Parrot Steakhouse--"

"Um, NO."

"Okay. Because that's back where we just came from. There's some Mexican restaurants--"

"No. The Pony wants a steakhouse."

"There's Montana Mike's. It's right up here. I can see their sign."

"Okay. That sounds fine."

The parking lot and sign out front didn't look very promising. Once we entered, it really didn't look promising. The floor was down to concrete in some places, the tile worn or pulled off. They were ready to seat us, though. So it was full steam ahead.

Our table sat six. Hick, The Pony, and I sat on one side, with Genius across from me, and Friend across from The Pony. Of course my seat put my head in a ray of setting sun that could have doubled as the direct energy weapon that conspiracy theorists say started the California wildfires. I was pretty sure I wouldn't burst into flames, and pretty sure the sun would set before my meal arrived. I was half right.

Hick had the filet mignon and fries with a Caesar salad. The Pony had steak and fried shrimp with a Caesar salad and baked potato. Friend had a steak of some kind with a baked potato, and gave his Caesar salad to Genius. Genius had an avocado chicken wrap with fries. I had the teriyaki glazed chicken with fries and a garden salad, and immediately wished I had ordered broccoli instead of the fries. Too bad, so sad, I had to live with my unwise choice!

That's my garden salad, with raspberry vinaigrette dressing on the side, and the torn-off end of a roll I asked The Pony to share with me. Notice a ray of that direct energy weapon trying to set my salad ablaze!

This is my teriyaki glazed chicken on a bed of hidden rice, and the fries of regret. That chicken was DELICIOUS! The fries were good, too, though the guilt was difficult to stomach. Kind of like that cucumber slice, which stayed with me all night.

No, I didn't get a picture of everyone else's plate. What kind of person does THAT?

Everybody was full to the brim after our lupper. Genius couldn't finish his wrap. The Pony donated three shrimp to Hick. I left some fries on the plate. Friend was wise to forego the salad and make room for real food. And Hick is always a member of the clean plate club.

Our waitress was a spritely little thing, very polite and unobtrusive, and earned herself a nice tip. Consensus was that the food was great, we'd eat there again, and first impressions of this place were diametrically opposed to the end result.

  1. The death ray on the salad cracked me up! Food looks good, but as much fun as I make of Jersey, the closer you get to NYC the better the restaurants. Not just the chefs, I think we are just closer to better and fresher ingredients. Food and Springsteen, plus dirty water cocktails. Anyway, Merry Christmas!

    1. You never know what fragments of truth might be captured in a photo. For what the restaurant looked like, the food was a pleasant surprise.

Merry Christmas to you and Mrs. C. Have a dirty-water cocktail for me! Or two!

  2. I'll make a note of the name and location just in case I ever somehow find myself in Oklahoma. what is this guilt you speak of? Fries are to be enjoyed and as long as you go back on your diet right after a small lapse is nothing to worry about. every diet is allowed one treat per week. I'm astonished that one cucumber slice stayed with you all night. Must have been one of those old fashioned 'green cucumbers'. Out here most people tend to buy the small lebanese cucumbers or the long thin continental cucumbers much less burping involved. Most times for me, no burping at all. Friend should have eaten at least a little salad, that's what helps everything else get well digested.

    1. I really regretted those fries, because I'd had fries the day before with my part-rubber chicken sandwich. Okay. Only a couple, because Genius and Friend ate most of them. And Saturday IS in a different week from Sunday, by my reasoning. So I guess I didn't need to feel guilty. Let the record show that I DID eat only HALF of those fries.

Cucumbers always give me heartburn. Even a single slice. Friend should indeed have sampled his salad, but I think he wanted to leave room for his baked potato, having been on the keto diet until that week, limiting carbs.

    1. At least I didn't eat all of them. The minute they arrived, I was wishing I'd chosen the broccoli. Which is something I ALMOST never say!

  4. Your chicken looks delicious but I was a bit taken aback by a plate with BOTH fries and rice. That would seem to be enough carbs for a week or two. But you said you didn't eat all the fries so that's a saving grace. I would gather the steaks were good since it sounded like everyone cleaned their plates. About the look of the place - sometimes those dive-ie looking places have the best food. I've eaten in some.

    1. Yes, rice was not mentioned in the description, or I would have definitely ordered the broccoli side. I didn't see the rice until I cut into the chicken.

We have a hole-in-the-wall bar/restaurant here called Shamrock, the building painted green, on the old road over by the cemetery, that is renowned for its steaks. Been there once or twice before we had Genius, and they DO serve up a good steak. Probably a high school kid cooking it...

  5. Sometimes the best food is in the oddest places. We sometimes make a rather long drive to a small city to eat in a bar and grill. They have the best steak!

    1. We used to do the same for fried chicken! Hick would take me to the city to McDermott's, as he called it, a little bar over in the area of the zoo. I think it might be called Pop's now. Best chicken ever! Better than The Gas Station Chicken Store!
