Val is Preserved for Perpetuity Like an Insect in Amber. Or at Least for a Year, Like a Pickle in Brine.

Gather 'round the paddock and greet the newest little filly in Val's stable of published works.

Ain't she sweet?

That artsy photo was taken by The Pony this evening, with the instructions: "Get me a picture of my book, and don't show a mess in the background. Open the shades to let in a little light."

Of course I no longer have a program to crop photos, since Genius built me my new computer last summer. Woe is me, no Office 2010 to kick around anymore.

This anthology contains two of my stories. Okay. They're not so much "stories" as they are tales of Hick's shenanigans.

The first one is "One Man's Hot Tub is Another Woman's Nightmare." It received an Honorable Mention in the Saturday Writers 2015 "Water" contest. This little story also WON the nonfiction division of the All Write Now 2015 Conference last July.

My second story in this anthology is "Let the Breather Beware." It received 1st Place in the Saturday Writers 2015 "Air" contest.

Now it's time to get to writin' some more stories so I can submit again. To get on the stick, as we say around here, when we can FIND a stick that hasn't been burned beyond recognition in an accidental Hick fire.

Did I ever tell you about the time he decided to burn all the grass in the front yard (field) of our cedar-sided home?

  1. Dang, you Thevictorians are always winning something...auctions, scholarships, writing contests, Teacher of the Year (I just assumed you've won at least once) , I better lay off the dirty water cocktails or I'll never amount to anything. I bow to your prowess...Congratulations!

    1. Thank you.

The only teacher contest I would have a chance at would be Invisible Teacher of the Year. I am often overlooked, perhaps because I show up every day and do my job without making waves. At least that's the reason I like to tell myself.

Enjoy your dirty-water cocktails. In retrospect, I wish I had take off more of my 96 remaining sick days. Especially on days I was really sick.

  2. Val,
I might be wrong but I think one of my stories is included in that anthology. My story is called "Silent Screams." I haven't decided if I want to buy a copy yet and was surprised and disappointed writers accepted for inclusion weren't given complimentary copies.

    1. I haven't cracked it open yet, but now that I finished my taxes (and Genius's) over the weekend, I will have time to take a look for your story.

  3. Congratulations, Val. I'm sure you'll soon have to build a new bookshelf to hold all the books that include your writing. You know, one of those "floating" shelves, with some track lighting to highlight it.

    1. WAIT! I think I need a whole library! Sure, I'm just getting started. But maybe having my very own literary shack will motivate me during retirement. Hick needs to get crackin' on my shed!

He'll probably tell me to buy one at Lowe's.

  4. It's about time Val had her own shack. You could sit there musing all dressed in white linen maybe smoking a cheroot in an onyx holder and Hick could bring you dirty water cocktails.

    1. Be still my heart! I don't dare dream of such a life.

That's because Hick would smudge my white linen with arson ash or hot dog juice, make sure I only had a partial box of Swisher Sweets, and drink my dirty water cocktail before he got it to my shack, which would be a pre-made metal lawnmower shed with no windows.

    1. My Hick-Muse LIVES to be immortalized. He told me just this evening..."Go write another book about me." In true Hick style, he has aggrandized his value.
