He Makes It Really Hard To Hang On, Hang On, Hang On To What We've Got

That Even Steven! He's such an imp! Just when I am celebrating and planning and in a good mood...he pulls the rug out from under my red-Croc-shod feet faster than Lucy Van Pelt yanking that football away from Charlie Brown's kick.

Just this morning, right after I returned from dropping off The Pony at his summer tutoring assignment, the phone rang. I normally don't pick up if I don't recognize the number, but in case it had something to do with The Pony, or maybe my blood test results, I answered.

Great Googly Moogly! I won a cruise! That's right! I had been chosen to receive a cruise to--I don't know. Because that kind of call is always a scam. So I hung up. I didn't enter any cruise contest.

Five minutes later, the phone rang again. Like I said, I normally don't pick up if I don't recognize the number, but in case it had something to do with The Pony, or maybe my blood test results, I answered. Great Googly Moogly! The IRS is filling a lawsuit against me! They have been trying to reach me, and I need to call--no I don't. Because that kind of call is always a scam. So I hung up. The IRS contacts by mail. Not by phone or email.

Oh, but Even Steven has been busy since Friday! That's when I received a check in the mail. Since my sister the ex-mayor's wife and I have been settling our mom's estate, we have been getting intermittent monetary rewards in various amounts from assorted sources. We never know how long it's going to take. So I was pleased that this shoe had finally dropped, even though it seems we've been dealing with a well-shod millipede.

I think Even Steven might be in cahoots with Hick. I can't prove their connection, but on Saturday, Hick spent my most recent inheritance, plus $190.01 extra. That's not very EVEN, Steven! Here's what he got for my money:

That's it. Sitting at the department of conservation auction. Uh huh. That blue one. Not the green ones. We already had a green one. John Deere green, you know. This one:

Hick's already had an offer, the same day he parked it out by the sinkhole. I'm not sure if this offer is going to be the EVENING or the STEVENING.

One thing's for certain. It will all balance out.

We Sure Need Those Stinkin' Boxes!

Yesterday I was beset by an unfortunate series of events in the local Save A Lot. Okay. There were only two unfortunate events. But even you must admit that "an unfortunate couple of events" or "an unfortunate pair of events" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

I had just entered the store and pulled a cart from the stacks when an old man darted in front of me. And by "darted," I mean he shuffled along like an elephant pulling a red circus wagon containing a pacing lion behind bars. I was in a hurry, but this arthritic darter did not perturb me. After all, he had only left his cart to check out a display of Little Debbies on a special sale rack. I can't fault him for that.

Moving on down the front aisle, I caught a whiff of a most unpleasant odor. It was a combination of the perfume worn by old women, and poop. I suppose eau de toilette would be a good name for it. I don't know what this fragrance is, but both my grandmas used it, and later my mom used it, and I recoil and sometimes gag at the scent. It's like they use it to cover up their unwashedness. Not that my grandmas or mother smelled of poop, mind you. It was just that fragrance over an underlying aura of unbathedness.

I held my breath and continued past the limes, deciding not to waste my money on those big bright green behemoths, and instead grab a bag of the tiny dull ones at Walmart the next day. On down past the yogurt and cheese and biscuits and eggs to the sour crea--SWEET GRANDMA'S SPATULA--there was that odor again! Stronger! I spied the old man, now with an old woman, putzing around near the end of the pickle aisle. Whew! I shot up that aisle while holding my breath. I grabbed my pickles and sweet banana pepper rings and sliced black olives, and turned to go down the pasta and canned meat aisle. Not because I wanted anything there, but because I needed to return to the back aisle. I'll be dadgummed if those stinkers weren't coming right at me! "I'll need to lean on that cart now," said Grampy. And Granny pushed it over to him, fanning the air and making me wonder how they could be getting more potent as they progressed through their shopping.

Yeah. They followed me EVERYWHERE. I couldn't get away. Act like I forgot something and go two aisles back? They were onto that strategy. They appeared right behind me. I did not try to outrun them, because when they eventually caught up, their stinky air bubble would keep coasting right at me. I had a fleeting thought to dash up the mouthwash/deodorant/soap aisle, sweeping products off the shelf that might break open and splash on them...but I was afraid they might slip, and grab one of my ankles and bring me down on top of their writhing, odorous, less-than-fresh bodies. So I decided to hold my breath as long as I could, then breath through my mouth. Even though that meant I would, in effect, be eating their stink.

My other unfortunate Save A Lot event was the Great Empty Cardboard Box Caper. I know that every Saturday, Save A Lot runs low on cardboard boxes. If you've never had the pleasure of stinking up the place, it's a store where you bag or box your own purchases. There's a counter up front by the windows, with empty boxes from their merchandise stacked under it. They have plastic bags on several racks, too, if you're in the mood for bagging (if anybody writes a song using that title, I demand a royalty).

Because I know that Saturdays are scanty box days, I was on the lookout for boxes as I shopped. It's not hard. Usually, you can take a few boxes of cereal, or bags of noodles, and stack them on the next box of product and take that empty box up to the register in your cart. But I wasn't seeing any suitable boxes. Even on the pickle aisle, it looked like somebody had already consolidated the products on the shelves. Then I heard and saw the problem.

At the head of the pickle aisle was a big metal cart just rounding the end cap. A worker dude in a red shirt was pushing that squeaky metal cart, which was stacked with EMPTY BOXES! And he was coming from the direction where I was heading. Most often, the employees speak to you in there. But this one did not. I went past him. If he had only spoken, I would have greeted him and said, "Hey, bud, do you mind if I take a couple of these boxes off your cart?" Because that's what they do with them. They stack them up front for the customers to use. Since he didn't acknowledge me, I let him be. Sometimes people just want to be left alone to do their job.

I headed for the frozen food end. That's always a good place to find boxes, inside the glass doors, where the workers forget to straighten. I've always had success with chicken chunk boxes, or Texas Garlic Toast boxes. But not this day! They were picked clean! I knew that worker dude had to be over on the last aisle, where I had come in. Surely he would be taking those empty boxes up front to put under the counter. ACK! The STINKERS were back! I veered back toward the center of the store to excape, and to bide my time until the boxes were put out. I really hate using those plastic bags for heavy things like pickle jars.

After evading those STINKERS, I headed back toward the frozen food/chip aisle for some salsa and tortilla chips. And to my horror, I heard and saw the worker dude PUSHING HIS CART OF EMPTY BOXES INTO THE BACK STOREROOM IN THE FREEZER SECTION! Darn that fellow! I suppose he might have been planning to move, and needed the boxes for himself. Which helped me not at all. I went up front to check out.

At the bagging counter, all I could find was a long box with its top flaps still on, and holes in the sides, with a waxy coating, proclaiming CUCUMBERS. That had to do. I wasn't proud. ACK! The STINKERS again, right beside me, bagging their own purchases.

I hope that box hoarder was in the back, building two voodoo dolls of the STINKERS, preparing to douse them with liquid soap.

Val Shall Toss No Potato Before Its Time

You know how some people are poets and don't know it? That's not me. But I'm a brewer like a sewer! And I don't mean "sewer" like with a needle and thread. No sirree, Bob! I mean "sewer" like an underground conduit for carrying off drainage water and waste matter. The stinky kind. Yep, I only mean "sewer" with needle and thread if you're going to use it to sew your own nostrils shut.

I'M MAKING MY OWN VODKA!

Okay, I'm not making my own vodka on purpose. I didn't even know I was making my own vodka until today at 11:40 a.m. I was getting ready to leave for town to mail our fire tags for the house and 20 acres, plus our other property of 10 acres up on the hill, because if you don't pay the fire tag fee, and your house or land catches fire and the fire department drives all the way out here to fight it and keep the homes and properties of legitimate fire tag buyers safe...they will bill you for the cost of fighting your fire. Yeah. Something tells me that would be more than the $70 cost of each fire tag.

Now where was I? Oh. The VODKA! I planned to run in Save A Lot on the way to the post office, to pick up some sour cream and dill pickles and black olive slices in tiny cans, and salsa, and tortilla chips. And let me tell you, there was a real clusterf unfortunate series of events happening at the Save A Lot today. But that will have to wait until tomorrow.

So...I looked in the kitchen pantry to see if there was anything else I needed, but you know how it is, what with looking to see what's not there, and you can't actually see what's not there, so you don't know you need it until you've already gone to the store and come back home and go to reach for an item and you don't have it!

Anyhoo...I looked in the pantry, and didn't see that I was making my own vodka so much as I SMELLED I was making my own vodka. Funny how that vodka production jumped into high gear between 10:00 a.m.  when I last walked by the pantry and opened it up, and 11:40, when I really needed to hit the road to town. So I called The Pony upstairs for help.

"I'm never going to get to town. I need you to look under that bag of potatoes and see if there's an old bag of potatoes. That's what it smells like. Don't even worry about throwing them off the back porch for the animals! Put them right in the trash, and then take the trash bag out to the dumpster. Here. Take this good bag of potatoes, because the bag smells like the bad potatoes."

"Um. When I just put that bag of potatoes in the trash...I'm pretty sure there was some liquid dripping out."

"Go get the box of wipes and clean it up. Don't even bother with paper towels. We need wipes."

"Yuck."

"You can wash your hands later with this new bottle of Peach Bellini soap from Bath and Body Works that Sis gave me for Christmas. It smells great. Unlike our fresh vodka."

"VODKA?"

"Yes. That's what vodka is made of. Potatoes. Fermented. That's where you get alcohol. That's how prisoners can make their own hooch in the slammer. They take their fruit peels and some aftershave and stuff them in a trash bag under the bunk, and VOILA! A cocktail to sip behind bars!"

"Ugh. I knew vodka was made from potatoes, but I didn't know they had to get rotten."

"Well, where do you think the alcohol comes from? You don't get drunk eating potatoes."

"I know. So now we have a bag of vodka in the trash?"

"Certainly not! Not yet. It would need to be distilled. That would be some kind of rotgut vodka, all stinky and unpurified! We're not getting drunk just yet!"

Let the record show that Val knows very little about home brewing or distillation of spirits. She is a teetotaler from way back. On the wagon. Off the wagon. There is a bit of a gray area there according to whether you listen to Jerry or Elaine. But the thing is...The Pony knows even less. So forgive me if I pulled a Hick on him, spouting information that I knew he couldn't prove false. What he doesn't know won't hurt him. What he DOES know is that he certainly does not want to drink vodka if it smells like what he took out of the pantry.

So...if you have a kid who may be going down the wrong path, all you have to do is let your potatoes linger a bit too long in the pantry, and you can point out the evils of drink.

Public Service Announcements. Just one more bonus Val provides.

The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Shuttler

It's a wonder I can get anything done at all during the work day. Not that I'm working, you know. It seems I should have something to show for that time between when I rise at 4:50 a.m., and when I go to bed at 2:00 a.m. But I don't! How can that be?

Did you know that Val spends three hours on the road every day? That's right. THREE HOURS! An hour-and-a-half taking The Pony to school for his tutoring assignment and back home. Then another hour-and-a-half going back to pick him up. PLUS, Monday I had an extra hour of drive time getting a lab to take the blood I was trying to give, and Tuesday I had a three-hour breakfast with my sister the ex-mayor's wife, and yesterday we had an extra hour getting that universal charger.

So I hit the road but the road hit back. I thought I'd take the world in a hit and run attack. Now I'm center state and it feels bizarre--WAIT A MINUTE! That never happened! That's the lyrics for REO's "Rock & Roll Star!" For a minute there, I was livin' the dream. Seems like only yesterday I was contemplating changing the name of my garage band from Mommy's Got a Headache to Other Dogs' Anuses. How time flies when you're shuttling an overgrown Pony to and from kindergarten every day. I have not even had time to step off the foundation and mark with wooden stakes and string the location of my proposed handbasket factory. Or work on the proper sentence order of subject, predicate, and prepositional phrases.

I am all fired up about this little writing hobby of mine. Ain't that how it goes? You get bit by the bug, then you don't have time to scratch! I have submitted two entries to to different contests so far this week, AND written 12 blog posts, and I've got a most scathingly brilliant idea that I am working on for an online opportunity. If I can get my 17-year-old out of kindergarten, I'll have three more hours in my day. I won't just get started and have to staunch the flow of my creative juices while navigating scofflaws on the highways and byways.

He'll be gone to Missouri Boys State soon enough, and I'll be crying that he's not here. Then I won't feel funny any more, and my creative juices will dry up like the California water supply.

Enough of this time-wasting! I only have six hours and forty-five minutes until bedtime!

Rally 'Round the Flag, Boobs!

You know how some boys are really rough on the knees of their jeans? Rip them out roughhousing, shred them sliding into second, disintegrate them dragging down a dirt road on a piece of cardboard towed by 4-wheeler? So rough on the knees of their jeans that iron-on patches are required?

Yeah. Not my boys. Maybe it's because they're afraid I'll iron patches on the knees of their jeans, if I ever find an iron. But I'm more inclined to think it's because they have never really liked jeans. Oh, Genius wears them NOW, the fashionable kind that you pay extra to get with a rip already made, not the cowboy or factory worker kind that built this country, like Levis or Wranglers or Lees or Rustlers. The Pony was never a jeans fan. But even his slacks are immaculate in the knee region.

What The Pony DOES wear out is computer accessories. Namely power cords and chargers and connectors. Every year. No matter what brand of laptop, something goes terribly wrong. Smoke. Sparks. Shocks. Pointy Thing A unable to insert into Holey Thing B. Today we had to drive over to bill-paying town to a computer shop to fetch him a new universal charger. That's because, unbeknownst to me until Tuesday morning, his current charger has frayed wires that smoke and give a shock if touched. Uh huh.

"You need to get online and find one and I'll order it. It will be here in two days. You're going to burn the house down."

"No I won't. I unplug it at night. I checked the rug where the cord lays. It's not charred. Besides, I've been taking it to school with me. I use it when the teacher doesn't need my help with the kindergarteners. Don't worry. They won't get shocked. They never come over by where I am."

"YOU GO GET SOME ELECTRICAL TAPE AND WRAP THOSE WIRES BEFORE WE LEAVE FOR SCHOOL! And when we get home, you're going to show me what part to order."

"I have a charger for my old computer. The one we had to get because its charger was smoking and sparking when I plugged it in. Remember? We couldn't find one except from China, and Genius said it was fake and no good. So you bought me the universal charger. Then that plug-in thing broke the next year, out of the set of connectors that came with it, and you took me back to get a connector, and they just opened a pack and gave it to me. But now I have my new laptop, so all I need is a connector that fits it, because I still have that universal charger, which should work for this new one."

"We'll go after school."

Which we did. And he took in his universal charger and laptop to show them, but funny how they didn't just give us a free connector this year, because as The Pony was showing it to them, they saw that the end of that cord, where the connector hooked on, was dangling by frayed wires. "You're going to have to replace that, buddy!"

So we have a new $43 universal charger, which came with a set of various connectors. We're good for another year. But that's not what I started out to show you. What I started out to show you was THIS:

Yeah. It's blurry, because The Pony took the picture from the seat behind me, and he is a notoriously slow picture-taker. He is like the January molasses of picture-takers. If you want a picture of a tornado, you tell him when it's five days out in the forecast.

So, what do you think we have here, this vehicle we were behind for about ten minutes at the stoplight, and The Pony unable to snap that photo until it started to drive off? Do you think, perhaps, it's a CIA vehicle, all SUV-y and black, with tinted windows and an American flag taped to the back? No. I don't think so.

Here's the disturbing part. I'll read it to you, because I have it memorized. I imagine you can see the main part: SHOW ME YOUR BOOBIES. Yeah. I did not. The left side says: WHO WANTS LAID? HONK. I did not. But the most disturbing part is...included with these two commandments are the words in each lower corner: R I P GRANDPA. WE LOVE YOU.

It may not surprise you that after going our way for a mile or two, this vehicle made a left turn into an establishment called SCRAPPIN'.

I think the driver was on of those boys who rips out the knees of his jeans.

Val Is Not Exactly Running In the Preakness

Hear that sizzle? The drip of fat hitting flame? Detect the aroma of tender, succulent meat being grilled to perfection? Feel your salivary glands rejoice as the juices squirt from that first bite of pork butt onto your anticipating tongue? You know what season this is. It's the season of--

REEEEE!

I hope, for your sake, you don't have such a vivid imagination. Because there's a little mistype in that passage above. We're not really talking about pork butt. We're talking about...um...you might want to grab a bucket real quick-like...because what we have here is...so sorry...a reference to VAL butt! My apologies. I didn't mean to make anyone queasy. Okay, yes I did. I'm an imp like that. But I gave you warning with the bucket. Now lets get back to the reason for the season.

That's right. It's the season of submissions! Summertime! Val vacation. So she has lit a fire under her own butt in order get something constructive done while she has daylight to burn.

At 12:37 p.m, I sent in the registration for The Pony and me to attend a writing conference in July. Uh huh. After planning to do this since March, when I first heard about it, I finally got around to it. Which is not to be confused with a ROUND TUIT, which was a rip-off, really, a mere circle cut out of cardboard that my high school trig teacher handed out to us on the first day of class, declaring that we had no reason not to turn in our assignments on time because he knew we all would not be waiting until we got a ROUND TUIT.

Yep. The Pony has been goading me for a couple of weeks now. I kept planning to get 'er done, but stuff came up. Now the deed has been accomplished. I even put The Pony's own email address on his, though I did not make him pay his own way, so I imagine he got the email confirmation while in the middle of helping oversee a gaggle of kindergarteners during his tutoring session today. He will be so proud of me.

Now all I have to do is get my submissions ready. Not a big deal. I have quite a stable of suitable steeds to run in this race. A couple of them are even chomping at the bit. I will rein them in, though. Take them out for some intervals. Then make sure they cool down, and curry them until they shine. Besides, I still have A WEEK left to get them to the track.

It's not like the bugler has just now lifted his horn for the call to the post.

Val's Newest Affliction Responds To One of the Oldest Cures

You'll never guess what health problem is attacking me now! So I'll tell you. Because I don't believe in all that hypercritical oaf confidentiality clause crap. Are you sitting down? Do you have your Gray's Anatomy reference book open on your lap? Let's begin.

"Oh, no! The heartbreak of psoriasis!"That was my first thought. Not an official diagnosis.

Last night, while sitting in the warm glow of my New Delly in my dark basement lair, I reached my hand up to scratch a little itch on my throat, and instead encountered a rough scaly patch where the neck turns into chest, just before evolving into cleavage.

"NO! I don't want a lesion! I'll need to get this checked out. Why haven't I noticed this before? Why hasn't somebody said, 'You have a big scaly patch right where your shirt collar gaps open.' Is nobody looking? Am I THAT unappealing?" Sara Barron has a book, People Are Unappealing: Even Me. It's hilarious, but me not getting noticed when my skin is rotting away is NOT.

"Maybe I can soothe the dryness with a little saliva. It works for dogs." Not MY saliva, mind you. I don't go around licking the skin lesions of dogs. And I don't let dogs lick mine. I mean how a dog's saliva is good for a dog's skin lesion. So my saliva might be good for my skin lesion. Oh, and did I ever tell you about the class I had that referred to saliva as SALARVA? No? Just an oversight, I guess.

But getting back to my rotting flesh...I licked my index finger and bad finger on my left hand (I use my left hand a lot, and I'm probably ambidextrous, but I don't have time to brag right now because, have you heard, I have a skin lesion that needs moisturizin' with salarva saliva) and rubbed that saliva on there to see if my skin felt better. And IT DID! By that I mean that my chest skin felt the same, but under my fingers, that patch became as smooth as a baby's butt. Because my saliva apparently dissolved the residue left over from when I was a bit too ambitious in feeding my face a delicious too-big bite of broccocaulipeppot, and a floret of broccoli coated with Velveeta and some potato starch fell there, and I grabbed it and ate it because, hey, there are starving children somewhere who would love to have that bite of veggie goodness, even off of old Val's skin lesion.

But the good news is that I'm OKAY! No rough scaly patch. I only wish this would have happened out in public with both of my boys across the table from me. While I was holding The Pony's balls, and telling him to check out his brother's package. I'm sure you fondly remember those two tales. He, himself, does not. Fondly, I mean. The Pony remembers them all right. As far as Genius...I never really embarrassed him like that, except for having an insatiable desire to use the word REDONKULOUS.

I feel glad about my neck.
