Later Tuesday evening, when Hick seemed sufficiently recovered from his "broken" arm after Old Buddy's ladder/drill faux pas... I asked if he had any more pictures for me from Cheap House.
"No. I sent you some on Monday. There ain't nothin' new to see."
"What about the siding? That's what I've been waiting for. Pictures with the siding on the back of the house, now that the roof is done."
"I already sent them."
"No. It's just the plywood."
"That's SIDING, Val!"
"There isn't enough. There's no long pieces."
"Even after you said HOS saved it? That was your plan. To put the same siding back on."
"No. This is the kind I'm using. It's SIDING, Val. It even has a name: [BLAH BLAH BLAH] siding."
"It looks terrible and unfinished. Just like you tried to do on Bargain House without any paint or anything."
"Everybody likes it, Val. They tell me it looks good."
"We've been through this before! Of course your friends are going to say it looks good."
"Realtor Guy said so, too!"
"Of course! He wants to be sure you list it with him!"
"Well, he wants to be sure to get the most for his commission, too!"
"Not a single one of 'my people' like this look. It's like unfinished plywood."
"It's SIDING, Val! And yes, that's how I'm leaving it."
"I bet it will take $2000 off the sale price! Because any flipper will know they have to get siding for the back of the house."
"Whatever."
I call shenanigans! All along, Hick has said he was putting that matching siding back on the house. Now all of a sudden, he can't do it. So he went and bought this wood "siding" to cover the back of the house. An expense we don't need, which makes the house look worse! Also, unless Realtor Guy makes a habit of driving the 20 miles from Bill-Paying Town every day to admire Hick's handiwork, I don't think he's been there since the one time Hick told him we wanted to list it with him. The roof wasn't done yet, and for sure the "siding" wasn't on the back of the house.
Once again, I seek your honest opinion on this look...

I agree 100% with you Val. Even before reading your comment on it looking like plywood. When I saw the picture, I thought to myself, that it looked like plywood. I guess what Hick thinks is siding versus what we think is siding is different. If I bought a house like that, I would definitely have someone come to put what we think is siding up on it. Ha!
ReplyDeleteAt least we are planning to sell this one to a flipper, so they will not be expecting something that is aesthetically pleasing! And it is all ready to hang REAL siding on it!
DeleteBefore you confirmed what it is supposed to be, I definitely thought it was plywood. Not a good look, in my opinion. Again, it might work if it was painted but I'm not sure if that will help all that much. Sorry Hick, but I'm with Val on this. Again. Ranee
ReplyDeleteObviously Hick has surrounded himself with "yes men." I'm shocked he hasn't polled his Harem to add to the unanimous approval.
DeleteT11 is not siding. Not if 3 sides are vinyl. I was with hick on going for another house but with val on siding makes it look like a chicken coop or a shed
ReplyDeleteI wish Hick could get that through his head! He's the only person I know who calls that stuff siding. The only good thing I can say is that it covers the hole left in the back of the house from when the porch/bedroom was torn off.
DeleteHonest opinion? Oh Boy! It looks terrible, like unfinished plywood, which is not at all weatherproof and will begin to rot after the first rain.
ReplyDeleteIf it is "proper siding" I guess it will do the job, but I can't see anybody liking it. It should at least get painted to match the rest of the house and for an extra layer of weather protection.
If I was in the market for a house I would walk away from that in a hurry and I would be telling my friends too.
I hope he puts a step up to that back door at least.
According to the Lowe's receipt, this is pine (although Hick tells me every time that it's cedar), so it probably won't rot. It WILL fade to a gray color and look even worse, unless paint or a stain is put on it. Any flipper who buys it will likely put "real" siding over that wall.
DeleteI don't know about a step, but looking at the picture again, I want to know what that trench is for in the back yard.
You are right and as always Hick has to debate the facts. Hold your guns.
ReplyDeleteSo true, about my rightness, heh, heh, and Hick always debating the facts. The only reason I won't have a fit over this "plywood siding" is because we are selling this house to a flipper. Who should be ecstatic that the old porch/bedroom was torn off, and the back of the house covered from the weather.
DeleteHe should compromise and paint it the same color as the siding. It would cut the visual starkness of the plywood look.
ReplyDeleteThat's what he did at Bargain House, and it turned out better than I expected. If we end up keeping this one to finish it ourselves, I am going to insist on actual vinyl siding to match the rest of the house.
