Who You Gonna Call? Hick Fixer.

Hick seems to be on-call 24/7/365. It's not part of his just-over-$300 a month "job" with the senior apartments. The other guy was never on call like that. He basically just collected the rent every month, for the four apartments that were occupied at the time. For the same money Hick started at, and worked the first year. Nobody would have thought to call HIM for the most recent problem.

"My friend who runs the kitchen called and said there was water dripping from the ceiling. I went by, and found out it was a water heater leaking up in one of the apartments. So we had to get a new water heater. I took out the ceiling tiles in the kitchen. Now I have to get new ones and put them up.

I told my friend, 'Maybe I should just leave it like it is. Because of that guy with the city, who complained that I shouldn't be doing any work on this building, because I'm not a licensed contractor.' She said, 'Now let's not be too strict about this. Maybe you should go ahead and fix it, and see if he complains. Then you can say you are sorry.' I told her, 'I can say that since it was OUR water heater that caused the problem for HIS kitchen, I thought I was the one responsible for fixing it.' She said that sounded like a good plan."

"You'll get paid for doing all that work, right? Other than just your salary?"

"Oh, yeah. I'll get my contractor's fee."

Heh, heh. Even though he's not a licensed contractor. Hick is paid by the board of the nonprofit organization running the apartments, not by the city, which technically owns the building, but leases it to the nonprofit for a dollar.

  1. I agree, better to do the work and then apologise if necessary, than to leave it and hope it gets done quickly before too much damage is done.

    1. Yes, Hick would never leave his gal pal with that mess. He was just taking a poke at the guy who doesn't appreciate his work. He took out the old water heater that day, and put in a new one this morning. Not sure about the ceiling being replaced, but I imagine it was that afternoon, or as soon as Hick got the new tiles.

  2. Better to ask forgiveness than permission. But I think this exposes that these situations should have an answer prepared. If that guy doesn't like Hick helping, I wonder if Hick should only do as much as he won't get in "trouble" for BUT should let everyone know why :)

    1. Hick will do the work until he is forbidden to take on a project. He doesn't ask permission for every little thing. If asked, he will do it. He only makes comments about it to his friends that work in that building.

The city librarian asked him to do some work at the library. This guy heard about it, and told the librarian no, but sent another contractor there right away. She got the work done, but still hired Hick to do some personal renovations at her home.

    2. Wonderful! I just get nervous, folks are so malicious and anyone who complains about Hick needs to be avoided - except you of course because those complaints are legit! ;)

    3. Hick's survival depends on me complaining about him! Without that outlet, he could be in danger! I don't know why the others complain. I'm guessing because they don't get their way, like the elderly cusser and his rug. Or they feel undermined, like the guy at the city, and the fire chief. That somehow Hick's success reflects poorly on them.

  3. Judge Judy would applaud Hick, since she says that everyone should be compensated for their work.

    1. This is one of the little things Hick has not bothered to tell me. I kept saying he was doing too much work there for his "salary." It took a lot of interrogation for the reveal. I guess because it's HIS money, and he doesn't think I need to know. Can you tell this still bothers me?

    2. Yes, I can tell! It would annoy me, too. We have our money and my money, because everything that is his is mine also!

    3. Of course it would be completely fair if we had OUR money and MY money, heh, heh!
