It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without Val's 7 Layer Salad!
I almost hated to dig into it. Almost. Romaine lettuce, green onions, boiled eggs, peas, mayo, shredded cheddar, and bacon.
Hick had his plate filled and was sitting down to eat before I came back to kitchen upon announcing it was ready. The Pony got a picture before Hick began feeding.
As you can see, Hick prefers ham to turkey. And doesn't mind his foods touching.
The Pony forgot the deviled eggs, and had to go back!
The Pony loves (Stove Top) stuffing and the "vinchtables." Even tried the hash brown potatoes this year, though they were left from our last holiday meal, and unfrozen this time.
Can you believe The Pony eschewed my 7 Layer Salad to make a plainer version??? And that pan of Sister Schubert's Rolls belongs to The Pony. Hick and I had our own.
It's Thanksgiving, and I believe in turkey. So I had a turkey leg!
It was a bit tendon-y, as are all turkey legs, but I enjoyed gnawing on it and waving it about. The Pony said I belonged at a Renaissance Fair. I also had a scrap of ham, deviled egg, hash brown potatoes, roll, green beans with ham, and roasted vegetables. And the star of my meal, the 7 Layer Salad.
Dessert was an Oreo Cake. Hick and The Pony love it. Me, not so much.
It's not the prettiest cake I ever made, but I'm sure the flavor was all that mattered to the feasters. It looks a little better from the top.
I was planning to have a bit of Hick's anniversary cookie for dessert.
Turns out I was too full of turkey leg and salad. No room for dessert. I'll try again tomorrow.
The Pony left with a box full of leftovers. FRIG II is as stuffed as I am.

Everything looks so good. I can only imagine how good that salad is. We had the "free" turkey from my husband's work along with mashed potatoes and gravy, dressing/stuffing (whatever you choose to call it), sweet corn and crescent rolls. I made an apple pie a couple of days earlier, but we ate too much, too late and didn't have room for pie. How was the smoked turkey? It sounds interesting and yes, your turkey leg made me think of the Renaissance fair, where every other guy walks around, gnawing on a turkey leg. We haven't been in years but used to go every year. I have quite a few framed pictures on my wall that came from the Renaissance festival. Still like them. The effort it takes to go any more (miles of walking and that's just from the parking lot field) and it is just so much of the same stuff over and over again. (And we now live another 50 plus miles further north from the location.) Anyhow, it looks like you will have some leftovers for the rest of the week. We definitely do. (it was just me and my hubby) Ranee
ReplyDeleteThe smoked turkey is surprisingly moist. So far, I've only had a leg, and a bit of the breast. I'm looking forward to the thighs.
DeleteGenius used to go to an occasional Renaissance fair, along with a friend who was into it. I think Genius was probably interested in a flagon of mead, rather than a turkey leg. After all, he was still on his "college liver," as he used to tell me.
Oh, yes - the mead was fabulous. We even found a supplier to the fair that lived somewhat locally, and we would purchase quart jars of different types of mead. It was a very nice, mild beverage for an occasional drink. We bought from this supplier a couple of times but haven't been inclined to go back. Maybe we over did it previously? Or maybe he stopped making it. I can't remember now but it was very nice. I am not a big drinker, but I did enjoy a glass of mead now and then. Genius had good taste although the alcohol level was fairly low, as I recall. There is enough craziness at a Renaissance fair without a bunch of boozy drunks running around in costume. OMG, just had a major SMH moment. Just the thought.....
DeleteGenius probably supplemented his mead consumption with Natty Light! Unless he was the driver, of course. Then no mead (or Natty) for him!
DeleteI am here for it all, except I am not a huge fan of olives, lol!
ReplyDeleteYou can pick them off!
DeleteTommy won't eat an egg of any sort, so one egg makes me two deviled eggs. It all looks delicious, except for the cake since I do not like Oreos. Well, I love them if you remove the Oreos. I refused to eat peas. Then, found out I am allergic to peas. The rolls look delicious.
ReplyDeleteI would eat the cake plain. It has chunks of Oreos, but they don't taste like Oreos. I don't like vanilla, thus the icing does not appeal to me. I can't stand plain peas, but I'll eat them in a salad or soup or pot pie. Or that pasta dish Alfredo.
DeleteThe Pony said you belong at a Renaissance Fair? Let me tell you about my oldest son who is now 50 (50!!), at their house he oftens roasts a leg of lamb (think Ham on the bone but a bit smaller) and after the meal the left over leg gets wrapped in foil and placed in the fridge. Next day, Son takes the foil wrapped leg to work for his lunch, but not to make sandwiches or delicately cut off slices or pieces. No.. he unwraps the leg, picks it up by the bone and chomps right in!
ReplyDeleteHeh, heh! How unpretentious. The total opposite of eating a candy bar with a knife and fork. (Sorry you'll miss that reference, not being a Seinfeld fan.)
