Hick has a little problem with impulse control. You don't dare mention an idea you have for future plans, or he'll be rolling you out of bed the next morning to complete them. NOW! Not in the future. Not next year, not next month, not next week, not tomorrow, but NOW! With an alarm set for 6:00 a.m. If we're leaving on a trip at 9:00, then you'd best be ready by 8:00, because Hick will be sitting in A-Cad in the garage, fuming that you are late. If we talk about looking at investment property for The Pony to rent to own, Hick goes out the next day and signs a contract on a house.
Well. The ink was barely dry on the earnest money check when Hick took it upon himself to buy cabinets on Saturday for the house we haven't closed on yet. Don't even have a DATE for closing! He would have bought cabinets SOONER, on the day after signing the contract, but that guy had already sold them.
So... Hick doesn't know the dimensions of the future kitchen. Doesn't even know which side of the gutted house he's going to put the kitchen on. But he has a set of cabinets ready to go! Never mind that by the time he's ready for cabinets, there will have been 20 or 30 cabinet opportunities. Had to have THIS set. NOW!!!
That's only part of them. The part the seller hauled out here for Hick, in a nice closed-in white trailer that a cabinet shop might use. Like a plain U-Haul. Hick had the rest of it in the back of SilverRedO, and then had to go back for the countertop. He moved A-Cad out of the garage so they could unload easier, then brought HOS (Hick's Oldest Son) out here to move all pieces into Hick's Freight Container Garage. For storage, until we actually BUY the house they're going into...
Anyhoo... they're not fancy. Hick isn't re-building the Taj Mahal. He's renovating a safe, livable house. These cabinets came from a house that belonged to somebody's grandma, that is currently being renovated by the seller of the cabinets, who's actually a cabinet installer by trade. They were purchased from Hood's, which is a cut-rate Lowe's in this area. We've bought a lot of stuff from Hood's over the years. They have good prices. A few fancy handles, and these cabinets will work just fine. I think that one in the foreground has a lazy Susan thingy inside, like my own corner cabinet. Hick says the good thing about knowing they're from Hood's is that if a piece is damaged, it won't be hard to get a matching replacement.
This bargain cost Hick $700. Like I said, the rest of the purchase is over in the Freight Container Garage (where these are now), and not shown in the picture. There are uppers and lowers, a double stainless steel sink (which The Pony had requested) with the faucet hardware, a granite-look countertop, a range hood, and a kitchen light.
Hick saw it on Facebook Friday night. He called the guy, who said he had several people already interested in them, and he'd call Hick back to let him know. Which he did on Saturday around noon, while Hick was at his Storage Unit Store.
"He said he was tired of waiting on people to get back to him, and was selling to the first person to show up with the money. I said I was closing up around 2:00, and I'd be over there with cash. He said he could help me haul them if it wasn't too far. They were sitting under his buddy's carport. I counted out 7 hundred-dollar bills, and we loaded them up."
Which is how Hick ended up at the auction with only $40 in his billfold.
Those are very nice cabinets I hope they work out!
ReplyDeleteI guess the good news is that Hick can build the kitchen around those cabinets, with everything already torn out of the house.
DeleteYou may think those aren't fancy, but they're a lot nicer to look at than what I have AND The Pony will have a granite look countertop! Not to mention a double sink. I don't even have a double drainboard. I am so jealous! If you squint in my direction you might just see the faintly glowing green of envy.
ReplyDeleteGreen is my favorite color. I don't begrudge you your envy. The cabinets are nicer than what I had in my $17,000 house when I moved in. They looked like they had been made from paneling. Of course Hick renovated the kitchen, with cabinets from Hood's, and butcher-block look laminate countertop. Part of the leftovers of which make up my lair desk.
DeleteI agree, nice cabinets. Pretty sure will make them work...or else he could probably sell them for $700.50.
ReplyDeleteYes, always looking to make a profit, that moneygrubber Hick! If only he would sell some of that junk he's accumulated in the garage for several 50-centses.
DeleteYou will soon be posting bragging pics of his remodeled Kitchen, perhaps redesigned kitchen is he needs a wallher or knocked out there. That man of yours is amazing.
ReplyDeleteHick is amazing with his self-taught building skills, and I will definitely be posting bragging pics of our yet-to-be purchased $23,000 house.
