The Meal Before the Meal

We spent Thanksgiving in Norman, Oklahoma with The Pony. Don't think he volunteered to cook a feast for us. He really doesn't care about helping people, you know. Not even his own parents, whom he misinformed of the dates for Thanksgiving break!

Hick wanted to go on Wednesday, stay two nights, and come back Friday. I argued that those are busy travel days, and I didn't like the idea of being in traffic for 9.5 hours Wednesday and Friday. Then The Pony said he wouldn't be out of class until 1:30 on Wednesday, which gave credence to Hick's plan. I thought that was a bunch of baloney! I'm SO SURE the students would hang around for a full day of classes on Wednesday...

Anyhoo, once our reservations were made, and late Monday night, The Pony revealed that he had misread the schedule, and he was off ALL DAY on Wednesday! Well. Too bad, so sad, for both me AND The Pony. The very earliest we could get there would be 3:30 on Wednesday. As it was, we didn't make it until 4:30. The Pony was chomping at the bit. Not to SEE us. But to get going and have supper and hit the casino. Good thing I advised him to go ahead and eat lunch!

Supper on Wednesday evening was at a steakhouse. The Pony had steak and a baked potato and a caesar salad. Hick had steak and shrimp, with a baked potato and a garden salad. I had the chopped steak, on a bed of mashed potatoes, topped with mushrooms and brown gravy, and sides of fries and slaw. I could kick myself (were I so limber) for leaving my phone in the car and not getting photos.

Lets just say that while the chopped steak itself was delicious, the other items didn't live up to my expectations. The bed of mashed potatoes was more like a threadbare flannel blanket! The mushrooms were less than one whole mushroom, sliced into four pieces. The fries, while crispy and tasty, were fewer than a small order at Burger King. And the SLAW! It was the major disappointment. I had a long, generous dish of the slaw. I tried to eat it. You know how I love my slaw! But it was NOT of the proper slawish flavor. The texture was good, the ingredients were good, but the wet part was not. It tasted like it had been poured from a bottle of storebought slaw dressing. I could not eat more than three bites. That's a tragedy! I gave it to Hick, who said it tasted fine to him, and ate about half. Hick does not have a refined slaw palate.

From there, we headed for the casino. It was 8:00 by the time we arrived. More on the casino tomorrow...

  1. I'm trying to wrap my head around your leaving your phone. I can't go 10 yards away from my phone without getting the heeby-jeebies!

    1. It was in the side of my gambling purse, which I didn't want to take inside. I forgot about the picture-taking capabilities.

  2. I was getting happy for you and your mashed potatoes until they were revealed to be inadequate.

The only thing that bothers me about leaving my phone is missing a call from someone that I actually care about.

    1. The mashed potatoes weren't even all that good, from what I was able to scrap off the plate in that thin layer. Not much taste. Two of the three people I actually care about were with me. I figured if Genius needed to reach me, he could go through Hick.

  3. I use store bought slaw dressing when I make my own coleslaw and I like it just fine. What do you put in your own home made dressing? And why is it better? I love mashed potatoes and would have been very unhappy with such a thin layer.

    1. I've only made my own slaw once or twice. It involved mayo and sugar, and a bag of store-bought shredded slaw mix. It has to marinate a while for the sugar to dissolve. That's how my mom made it. I generally prefer the version sold by Walmart's deli.

    2. Sugar? that's my Dad's preferred method, sugar in everything. No wonder I have such a sweet tooth. I've just checked the ingredients list on my store-bought bottle of dressing. It has sugar in it, but then so does almost everything bottled or canned, but it's a tangy flavour not sweet, probably because of the white vinegar and mustard flour etc that is also in it. My favourite Mayo has a hint of mustard too.

    3. Yes, I do think it needs a little vinegar for the tang. Not sure if Mom added that. Her slaw was sweeter than the Walmart slaw. The Red Lobster chain also has good slaw. They will add fresh-ground black pepper at the table if you want it. I'm not a pepper fan, but it DOES bring out the flavor of their slaw.

    1. Laziness, mainly. And why aren't you under arrest for snorting coffee? Oh...it's legal.

  5. I usually make my own slaw. Back in the day I discovered a packet of slaw seasoning called "super slaw" . My family loved it. All I had to add was mayo and vinegar. Can't find it anywhere now. Marzetti has a jar dressing that is pretty good.

    1. You usually make your own a-lot-of-stuff! I know what the food I prepare tastes like, so I prefer to stick to the creamy sweet goodness of WALMART slaw! The Captain D's version is also delicious.

    1. Yes, The Pony strapped on the old feedbag. I think he loved the rolls even more than the steak. He actually recommended that steakhouse because of the rolls. I think it was Logan's Roadhouse. We usually go to Saltgrass Steak House, but they have little loaves of bread instead of rolls.
