A Little Free Time is Always a Good Thing

I have been polishing up some submissions this afternoon. That's because I earned a reprieve from sandwich-making.

The Pony is lolling about his grandma's house, soaking up high-speed internet. Hick and Genius took off for a bout of Goodwill shopping. Genius has the bargain-hunting fever, because last night Hick bought him a camera and three lenses at the auction for twenty dollars. He has several cameras of his own, of much higher quality. But he likes taking things apart to see how they work, fixing them if they're broken, and selling them on eBay. He's quite the entrepreneur.

Hick bought a puzzle. I'm thinking it must have been a Coca Cola puzzle, because it was something he collects. I don't really know, because I have a tendency to tune out much of what spouts from Hick's mouth. Not maliciously, of course. There are only so many stories I can hear about the auction or Goodwill. I did gather that Hick drove his puzzle down to his creek-side cabin in his Gator, and settled in for a rainy afternoon of puzzle-working. When he returned to the house for supper, he reported that three pieces of the puzzle were missing.

At least he didn't bring home any auction meat.

  1. Only a glutton for punishment would buy a puzzle at Goodwill. Does Hick enjoy regular disappointments?

  2. If the puzzle was missing pieces, what could the meat be missing?

  3. Puzzles frustrate me. No way would I go away to work a puzzle, but if that is what salves your savage beast, I have lots of puzzles at school with pieces missing.

  4. Auction meat stew ..... mmmm. One man's trash is another's treasure, you know. We once had a problem with muskrat in our pond. Duane, The Trapper to the rescue. For free. He trapped it, sold the pelt and fed his family. Sounds like auction meat!

  5. I think I'd be more worried about what's included in the auction meat rather than what's missing. Wouldn't want to reassemble that critter to find out what it looked like.

  6. Sounds like a fun way to spend a day. I think it's great your son is so enterprising, buying cameras, fixing them and reselling. Splendid idea.

  7. Sioux,
Hick enjoys just about anything and everything. Auction meat would be near the top of his list. I almost feel bad that he never bid on it, demonstrating an uncanny psychic sense regarding my impending reaction.

    Stephen,
Things missing from auction meat: proper refrigeration, an expiration date, the USDA seal of approval, a nutritional label, a designation of what animal the meat used to be, acceptance from Val...

    Linda,
My grandma used to bring home 5000-piece puzzles of seascapes from the state mental hospital where she worked. Which made me wonder if the people inside or outside the ward were sicker. Sea and sky. All blue. Torture.

    Kathy,
Sounds plausible. All Duane needed was a box printed with Auction Meat. The boys and I saw a muskrat in a drainage ditch between Captain D's and McDonald's. Coincidence or conspiracy?

    Tammy,
Well...that's the thing. You don't really know until you place your bid and bring it home. I'm sure all sales of auction meat are final.

    Donna,
Hick loves a bargain. He makes rounds of all the Goodwills between here and St. Louis. Now he's turned it into a bonding activity. Unbeknownst to Genius, who has turned it into a moneymaker.
