I do feel a bit sorry for Hick, in his ongoing feud with a denizen of the Senior Center. They used to be such fast friends, he sitting at the workers' table, convening for bar bingo once a week, getting texts for objects of interest to him. Now he is persona non grata with that denizen.
Sure, Hick is a hard-headed know-it-all. That has never stopped him from having a plethora of buddies. He got on quite well with this denizen for over a year. Nobody knows what caused the fissure in their relationship. It seems to be beyond repair.
Hick tries to treat Denizen with a modicum of courtesy. Does not go out of his way to speak. Doesn't gossip. Last week, Denizen had an object on Facebook that Hick wanted. He sent a text that he would take it. No reply. The next day, Denizen responded: "Since you were the first person to ask for it, you can have it." I don't know what it was. Some treasure that Hick bought for whatever the asking price was.
"You know that you were probably the ONLY person interested, right?"
"Maybe."
"Because no way would she have sold it to YOU if anybody else had made an offer!"
Anyhoo... Hick thought that might be a sign that the frosty relationship was thawing. But NO! It seems that Not-Heaven is freezing solid-er!
"I made it over there to lunch the other day, and she was talking about the Christmas party. 'We'll have The Grinch, and maybe a Santa...' After I played Santa last year! I don't know who else she thinks she's going to get. It's like an insult! MAYBE they'll get a Santa!"
A few days ago, Hick went to lunch again.
"I don't even like going there anymore. I was sitting at the table, talking to Edna, and Denizen came in and sat at the table next to us. She said, 'Edna, come over here and sit with me.' And Edna said, 'That's okay. I'm fine here.' It's like she goes out of her way to be mean."
Seems like it. I feel bad for Hick. Nobody else there has a problem with him, and ask what the deal is with Denizen. Nobody knows. Not even her husband.
Maybe it's gone on so long she doesn't know how to fix it? Would Hick consider asking her if their friendship wasn't worth saving, having been friends for over a year? Just for him to say if he did something to upset her, that he was apologizing in hopes of restoring their friendship? Sometimes the meek do inherit the earth, well maybe restore a friendship. She might think apologizing is an implication she did "something wrong" and feels Hick is responsible. (even though no one knows what or who triggered this whole discord) Or maybe someone needs to call her out on being such a meanie. Ranee
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure she WANTS to fix it, after the Santa comments, and trying to lure away Hick's lunch companion to leave him sitting alone.
DeleteA while back, she DID ask another gal to text Hick to come to bar bingo. Hick was actually busy that night, and didn't go.
Hick has mentioned asking her to talk, but as far as I know has not done that. Other people have noticed, and say she's different, and they don't understand what Hick might have done. Hick is still friendly with her husband, who of course tells Hick he doesn't know what's going on.
I suppose there is no way that you could find out what the problem is? Then at least you could tell Hick. Perhaps it's a simple jealousy, with Hick being so popular wth everybody else. It doesn't seem fair though to "maybe" have a Santa when she knows Hick is good at it and willing to be Santa.
ReplyDeleteI don't know any of the people Hick hangs out with. I wouldn't recognize them if I backed T-Hoe over them! That might be the answer: jealousy. Like they are "competing" for attention from the same people, and she was there first, and feels betrayed. She can't come right out and admit that, so has no answer to explain their falling out.
DeleteMaybe: jealous of someone else, feels slighted by something Hick did not mean, has tried to get cozy with Hick unbeknownst to him as she is too subtle, menopause, mental problem. ???
ReplyDeleteTo me that is pretty aggressive and mean to try to lure his lunch companion away from Hick.
Maybe Hick can approach her concerned about what happened. And, not take nothing for an answer.
I thought it was just Hick being his hard-headed self about her being mean to him. Then he mentioned the lunch companion. And said another day when he hit BINGO, he called it out, and she wouldn't recognize him, even though several other people shouted that Hick had BINGO.
DeleteI don't know if Hick will try to talk to her. Other people at the center have complained that she's changed, and is mean to other people besides Hick. That's why some of her "job" duties changed. She's a volunteer.
If Denizon was a guy he could just ask, "What bug crawled up your ass" and the issue would soon be out in the open. I don't think that works with women...not sure even other women know what works with women especially when it comes to passive aggressive behavior.
ReplyDeleteOne of Hick's old storage unit not-quite-buddies was mad at him. Hick asked him, "What's the deal? Did I do something?" The guy said Hick always paid attention to the other guys, and ignored him. Hick said he had known them longer, and was just talking, and that semi-buddy could walk up and join in any time, he didn't need an invitation. That worked for a while.
