The Feast of Thevictorians

We had our 4th of July cookout on July 5th. That was to accommodate Hick, who wanted to spend time in his SUS2.5 (Storage Unit Store 2.5) on Saturday. AND Sunday. We got a later start than our usual cookouts, which have Hick grilling by 3:00. It didn't really matter, because it's not like we had any pressing engagements. The Pony and I had made the potato salad and deviled eggs on Saturday, then the baked beans on Sunday around 1:00. So the sides were ready and waiting for Hick to finish the main course(s).

There's Hick's plate. I know he also had a bratwurst, so he must be holding it, or had already eaten it when The Pony got this picture. I know they were chowing down as I was still filling my tray, and asked if anybody took pictures for me. You can see Hick already bit off half a deviled egg. That's about 2/3 of a BBQ pork steak. Notice he chose his own cutlery, that being my Pioneer Woman ceramic knife. Which is a paring knife. Not exactly meant for meat. We have plenty of other more suitable knives.

The Pony's plate looks like a crime scene! I don't know what was going on there. Maybe the Smokehouse Swiss bratwurst was laid in the round section before being placed on the bun? The bun which is mangled nearly beyond recognition! The Pony doesn't like pork steaks. And I'm pretty sure more that half a deviled egg was loaded on that tray.

I wanted a variety. I also added a sliced Vidalia onion and a dill pickle spear. Half a bratwurst was enough. And I need extra BBQ sauce for dipping. Please excuse my own paring knife! It's allowed, of course, because I'm quirky like that. I also prefer the smaller "salad" fork, rather than a regular fork.

Dessert was mainly for Hick, because The Pony is cutting back, and I prefer real food rather than sweets. He had storebought oatmeal/raisin soft cookies, and a long apple pie danish.

The food was good. The pork steak was a bit chewy, but the other half I had the next night was just fine. The Pony took home a few days' worth of leftovers. We are still feasting.

    1. We tend to have the same thing every time, but I figure people like to look at food pictures. I know I do.

  2. I really hate meat which is "chewy" I have childhood memories of chewing and chewing and chewing meat which just would not be swallowed, as I remember it was always lamb that I had trouble with and never even buy it now. I don't like the taste of pork, though it smells delicious and I remember mum's pork schnitzels were always great, but being coated made all the difference to the taste.
I think it's funny that you are allowed a paring knife but Hick is frowned upon for choosing one. Does The Pony always eat that quickly? My older son was the same, always finishing first and going back for seconds. Yet skinny like a blade of grass.

    1. Of course there are special rules for me! I like a small fork, and a small knife to go with it. I have no idea why Hick picks this ceramic paring knife to cut meat. Maybe because it rests in the crack between the sink edge and the edge of the dish drainer. So he just grabs it, and doesn't have to open a drawer.

The Pony actually eats at a normal speed most of the time, while Hick eats extra-fast, and I eat extra-slow. Also, The Pony doesn't usually have a crime-scene plate.

  3. Hick could set up a barbeque stand and sell that meal.

    1. I'm shocked he hasn't done that at his SUS2.5. I guess there would probably be another license that he needs.
