Now I will have to go to town earlier. I don't want to drive into the setting sun, barely able to see oncoming traffic in my lane! And I don't want to leave any later, because then it would be almost dark coming home.
It's the time of year when you think of more substantial suppers, served shortly after 5:00. That's when my dad got home from work. 5:10. So it seems like suppertime to me. Not 6:30 or 7:00, as Hick and I tend to stretch it out during the summer. He likes to work outside. Then wants something lighter, because he's been in the heat.
We finally got a cold snap. There was a freeze warning last night, and it's 43 degrees now, shortly before noon. Supper is going to be Shake N Bake pork chops, Stove Top Stuffing, green beans with bacon and onion, and biscuits. Plus sliced homegrown tomatoes. One of Hick's buddies has continued having tomatoes ripen. We have four left on the counter. I'm guessing they will be the last for this season.
I'll settle into a cozy groove until December 21st. At which time I'll be looking forward to spring, with minutes of daylight increasing every day. Of course there will be snow and ice to fret about in January and February. But daylight keeps on expanding.
We have 9 clocks in the house that need to be set back. None of them are automatic like our phone and computers. At least they get an extra dust off twice a year. Ha.
ReplyDeleteI prefer cooler weather and look forward to heartier fare. I do like cold salads and things of that nature during the warmer months and really, this past summer hasn't been super-hot like some years previously, so can't complain. Predictions are for a mild winter, so I guess we shall see.
I am definitely making chili next week and I think I am going to make some potato soup this week. My husband will eat the chili without complaint, although he might wonder if I'm on some kind of soup kick. Ha. He is not a soup man, which is unfortunate for me as I love hearty soups during the winter. He will look forward to chicken and dumplings, though, so that's another option. It's actually more like chicken soup but with dumplings instead of potatoes.
We now live north of the metro and one of the advantages is my husband rarely has to drive into the sun anymore and he loves that. However, living 50 miles from work and taking back roads due to construction, he must remain on high alert for the deer. Tis the season and they are on the move. He has those whistles on his vehicle which he does think they help, but he still watches closely.
Last week he drove in white knuckle driving in fog where he couldn't see beyond a short city block. It was one of the worst fogs the area has had in quite some time and covered several towns and cities. Not cool. Have a good week. Good luck with your new time schedule. Ranee
Hick likes soup just fine, as long as he doesn't have to eat the LIQUID part, heh, heh! One time I caught him with about half of a roast piled above the rim of his bowl of vegetable beef soup! We refer to it as his towering bowl of soup. I've never made potato soup, but I like to eat it elsewhere.
DeleteI used to drive an hour to work, on Hwy 8, which is 2-lane blacktop through mostly woods. I was fortunate to go west in the morning, east in the afternoon. So no issues with the sun. The deer are definitely on the move now. I see a couple every few days. Maybe now that I'll go to town earlier, I won't be on their schedule.
I look forward to the heavier meals of winter, too, even here where it's the same time all the time. And though I prefer the summer seasons when the shorts get shorter, I am constantly on the lookout for dears. (Bad boy, says Judy.)
ReplyDeleteI recall quite a few photos of you rocking the short shorts, heh, heh! Hick actually left me a note on the refrigerator one time: "Gone looking for dear." Good thing I know he's not about to incriminate himself, and that he's really terrible with spelling.
DeleteWhen we were younger, "no-one" and I used to joke about moving to a snowbound cave in Alaska to get away from our summer heat, but this last winter has seemed colder than usual and though we don't get the snow and ice weather I am already fed up with being cold. It's Spring here now but this week's daytime temperatures are all in the mid-high C teens with nights being low C teens so the range is between 53F and 64F by your scale. Of course by February I'll be complaining about the blistering heat..
ReplyDeleteYou have been enduring the cold, and are eager for the change. While I am startled by the cold snap, and running my under-the-table heater like it's below zero in the house.
